Bay area engine swap?

Hello guys,

Been stalking this forum for a while. I have in my possession a 92' runner with a 22RE I inherited when my mom passed away. I've slapped some 32s on there for some light wheeling. It's always had a slight knock since my mom had it swapped out before after blowing the head gasket and she didn't know any better. Lately it sounds like the timing chain slapping against the side of the thing, kinda plastic-y sound. Instead of rebuilding the whole thing I've considered doing a complete swap.

Im wondering if any of you guys are from the SF bay area who have experience doing swaps who would be willing to do the swap. I have some budget though not great, I'd prefer to assist with the swap to help me learn more about the truck.

What is the easiest swap for these engines? (besides another 22re) I like the idea of OBDII and a little more power. 3rz? 1uz?

What am I looking at in terms of prices for said swaps average parts and labor? ballpark?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you want a 4 cylinder again, go with the 3rz. Otherwise I'd personally go with a 3.4 v6. Swaps are very expensive though. Are you against rebuilding the 22re? It is a great engine for what it is.

when I think about it, I really loved the 22RE for what it was. Super built like a tank. Im not against rebuilding the 22RE. I just hate it when I see tiny prius' pass me up while I floor the thing. :car: Theres something nostalgic about that great little engine... maybe all the memories attached to it.

BUT, I've just been reading so much on the 3.4 swap on these forums and I like the idea of the power and newer electronics. I've asked around my city and mechanics are either a)discouraging the 3.4 swap or b)don't think they could do it or c)have never heard of anyone doing that. It almost like im speaking greek to them. I do like that idea though of having that extra power for say towing a camper or fully loaded rig. Maybe 3.4 is for me?

I do live in a burb east of SF, so maybe not too many 4WD enthusiasts who are into our beloved oldschool toys??

Do you know anyone in my area who would do such a swap? (22RE-->3.4L)

How much should I start budgeting for the swap?
