Locking your door even to a Calif bear can cause them to rip your door open using those huge claws.
I woke up to a bear in our camp that was attempting to get into one of the cars that 1 of the ladies had left chips inside. The american bulldog and German Shepard guard dogs went to play with it...lol. Play time ended when the AR and .40 cal went off. The car did have the door bent back some and that bear easily would have been in that lock car in 5 to 10 minutes. Btw we didn't kill the bear just scared it off, even in Az that would have been a headache with the rangers we didn't want. Even a black bear is one hell of a powerful animal.

I was discussing roof top tents with some folks overlanding in Africa. They seemed to be under the impression they were safe from the wildlife up high in their rooftop tents and didn't believe animals could get up there.
I posted these pictures to convince them otherwise...

Lol it is funny that overlanders think a wild predator can't get them on top of their lil SUV..LOL. I always have my dogs (early warning system or bait..lol) and my guns. Serious dogs are no match for most large North American predators but they sure do give me time to get a clean shot.

Someone once posted it took a few hours to remove the dash. Should have hired the bear - did it in minutes

Bear skin seat covers would be kinda pimp. It would have a fabulous story attached for everyone who gets in your ride. "Wow these seat covers are nice, where did you get them?"

Yeah, that won't help. Don't keep any food in your vehicle is the best advice.

Food is obvious, but you can't even leave toothpaste, gum, candy, empty food wrappers, edibles or anything tasty inside a vehicle - that's why they provide those steel bearproof lockboxes far away from the campsites....

Yep, I camp in bear country all the time. Always use the bear boxes! There's always a dork that doesn't and loses all their food, just don't be the easy pickings and the bears will leave ya alone. Of course if you are doing some dispersed camping that's another story...
Colfax is not far from where I live though, I think that poor guy was just unlucky since that was at his house!

I left my 4runner parked in grizzly country for a couple weeks with some granola bar wrappers and other stuff in it. There is no way you are going to get all the smells out so I don't bother. Grizzlies in the wilderness don't seem to be too interested in getting in anyways.
When I got back to the car I was wondering what I'd see when I rounded the corner but all they did was paw it.

Bears are no joke. Whenever we camp we always put our smelly stuff in a bear bag overnight. Not even thinking of taking that risk.

Luckily we don’t have any here on the rock, but yah be careful everyone who have bears as neighbors!

A portable Electric Fence is what the state of Alaska recommends. Just need to carry a spare battery.
