Considering I tend to do a lot of driving in Bumf**k Egypt, I rarely let my tank get much below 1/2. Kudos to you for almost running out of gas and potentially clogging your injectors with the crud at the bottom of the tank! :bigok:

Thanks! I know nothing 'bout having crud at the bottom of the tank. I manually pour nothing but only gas in there. Been doing this every since it was new. But hey, at least i have a full tank of fresh gas in there.

and i still got a good 5-10 mi. before refuel but without stalling out

On a Top Gear Challenge they drove 800miles with whatever car they wanted in stock form, none of the cars were rated for 800miles, they made it running the last 30 miles on 0 miles left on that gauge. The guage isn't accurate you will probably get 10-15 miles left seeing the cars they used were diesel.

Ive gotten it down to 1 right before pulling into the pump. Not a fun adventure. LOL. Still should have had a 2 gallon reserve though cause the tank only took around 21 gallons to fill. :driving:

No pics for proof but I got stuck coming home on a long weekend this summer with the family and trailer (sucked gas at twice the rate). Had 30kms showing left and was getting nervous. All the gas stations were closed. Dropped down to zero and I thought we'd be "camping" on the side of the road. Managed to drive another 20kms and found an open pump. I put 24.5 gallons into the 23gal tank.

I got close to "0" once I believe but that has been it.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that it was not a good idea to run a 4Runner almost dry a lot as it could damage the fuel pump due to the design of the pump.
I could be wrong about the pump but thought why take the chance.

When I am towing I fill up more often that I need to.
Given the MPG when I tow is usually 8-9 MPG, a gas station 20-30 miles away could be just too far then the amber light goes on.

Pretty sure you've got at least a 2 gallon reserve once the light comes on/you hit 0 on range/needle hits E.

I know that I've run it well below there and still never managed to get more then about 21 gallons in the tank.

Now, I'm not saying it's a good idea or that I do it with regularity (I generally refill at 1/4 tank) just saying that I don't know a single manufacturer that has those indicators hit zero when you are literally sucking on fumes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't modern fuel pumps use the fuel as coolant, so that running low causes them to run hot and shorten their lives? I've replaced fuel pumps in a variety of past cars, and it seems like I picked up that info somewhere along the way....can anybody confirm or deny?

This is true for the fuel pump in my Mustang and I believe it's also true for most in-tank pumps. I'd be curious to know if it also applies to our 4R's.
