Sweet. My leather is still not bad, but no way I'll go with a steering wheel cover or a non-leather steering wheel once it goes. I need that leather or I get sweaty hands while driving.

Did a little research and it looks like it would be a simple project to dye it black, especially since it will come with no guts. Can't wait to get rid of my flakey wheel!
 
I wonder why in the heck it's gray. All 3rd gen wheels were either black or tan leather. And the seller lists it as "Toyota" brand. I wish they had a better picture of the true color.

Whitson, when you get yours, post a picture of it next to something that is black.
 
Yeah I was curious about that too but for 90 bucks shipped why not, it still looks better than mine. He seems to be selling excess oem inventory, all kinds of vehicles, could be from a non US market?? Who knows, two ads that say more than 10 available so he must have bought a batch. I'll post some pics when it gets here.
 
That's not a bad deal. I lucked out and found a black one in a junk yard for $50.

New from Toyota they were like $600 or something!
 
FINALLY got this stupid thing done. i found a leather shop here in town that would "die" it black, first they literally just painted a die on. It looked horrible, brush strokes, blotches, etc... i took it back and they said they would strip that and use an actual die. it still sucks, and i wish i had another option to choose from but they are the only people in town. Anyways, its was 25 bucks, and now its black, with a blemish or two... i guess it matches the rest of the truck that way. so i'm into a new wheel that doesnt flake all over my clothes for under 125, which to me is way better than a bulky steering wheel cover.

That's a good idea, I hadn't thought of dying it, but I have looked at them before. I would very much like to get rid of my peeling steering wheel. Thanks for the pics.
 
are there any write-ups on how to actually remove and install? looks good! I need to get on this as well..lol:artist2:
 
the install was easy. hardest part was resetting all the colors and eq in my stereo... start with popping off the screw covers on the side of your airbag/horn button piece, then its really easy to tell what needs to be pulled out of the way, the horn button bracket (4 bolts) and a total of 3 screws i think, one of which holds your cruise control fob in place. then unhook the airbag connector and your ready to use a simple wheel puller to pop it off. make sure you disconnect your battery for a few mins prior to unhooking the airbag.
 
I think I would be tempted to use some SEM paint on the airbag cover to match the grey of the wheel. I'm curious how well the die will hold up on something you are in constant contact with. Luckily I got a cheap great condition wheel at so cal mini trucks right after I got the 4Runner.
 
I'm curious too, i told the shop it had to be tough, but since they did such crappy work who knows what I got. My biggest concern was getting rid of the flakey original wheel, if this one's gray starts to show up I'll just sharpie it lol.
 
I use obenauf Obenauf's Leather Care oil on my leather steering wheel when it gets dry... does a great job. (first use the cleaner, then the LP boot oil) it's slick for a day, but soaks into the worn leather and makes it feel 98% better.... it soaks up the oil...

If you can find an upholstery shop that will recover a steering wheel, let me know! I can't find any that will do it around my area. I'd be willing to send my wheel somewhere, if it's still cost effective that way.

I just had mine re-done as part of an insurance claim (driver window was smashed and the glass cut up the old leather). They appear to have done a very nice job of it, the leather isn't smooth and shiny like the 21 year old stuff, but it should wear in with time.

Actually the grip is baddass because it creates a ribbed texture. It honestly doesn't bulken it up too much.
