I've looked through all the treads I could find on this topic, but don't really feel like my question has been satisfied. So my bad that this is an 'old topic' but I'm really looking for some piece of mind before I get into this swap.
I've got a 2004 SR5 4WD, unfortunately its got the bottom of the barrel steering wheel, no media, no leather, nothin'. So I've been looking to do the Tacoma steering wheel upgrade. Given that I'm pretty new to the T4Rs and I know nothing about Tacoma's and their generational differences, I'm pretty lost in the sauce as far as what is compatible with what.
So far I've gathered that the wheel itself isn't really a problem, the splines on the steering column are the same. When it comes to piecing together the wheel, airbag, and clock spring, that's what throwing me for a loop. Most of the info out there seems to be swapping in the 2012-2015 Tacoma wheel on the 4th gen, but I'm struggling to find parts in that year range. I see a lot of wheels, but all the airbags seem to be listed for 2016+, and I don't know if those are backwards compatible.
I'm also curious if the newer Tacoma wheels can (easily) be swapped into the 4th gen. I've got a guy local that's got a 2020+ full set, but I'm reluctant because I haven't been able to find any writeups or videos on doing the swap with that new of a wheel. Is it the same as the older ones? Just a straight swap with some repining?
I'd be super grateful if someone could shed some further light on this for me. Thanks.
