BEFORE Up-sizing your tires...read this!

tire size for 1996 4runner

I bought my 4 runner new in 1996. I swear the replacement tires that firestone put on look smaller. Anyway, does anyone know the tire size, type that toyota originally put on? At 122K miles, I am looking to put new tires on and wanted some opinions what would be best. Majority of driving is on streets, but have rough and long driveway in winter. Thanks in advance for your advice.

2004 T4R tire upgrade

I plan on upsizing my tires very soon. I currently have 265/65/r17's on my 04, but plan on upgrading to 265/70's simply because I cant get the stock tires in Pirellis. I just plan on shopping around for a used 265/70 Pirelli to use as a spare. Its a heck of a lot cheaper than a new one (I just dont plan on rotating it with the rest).
 
On a similar note, what is the general opinion of 8-ply vs 10-ply tires. Are they worth the "insurance" ? I heard 10-ply (Load E rating) are more stiff and harsher than 8-ply, but when I do off-road, its on some really sharp rocky roads and I have been debating on getting some 10-plys. Is it worth it?
 
Your gonna need to upsize that spare too. You could probably still use the 265/65 in a pinch but I wouldnt chance messing up your VSC and other traction control systems - especially if yours is an AWD 4Runner. I just got a used 265/70 (of a different brand) for a spare - should work perfectly fine.

I woiuld stick with 8-ply. Remember, most of the damage off-road to a tire is in it's SIDEWALL. Therefore, if you are scared of a flat off-road, then you need to pick a tire with a good thick sidewall. BFG AT KO and Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor are good popular choices.

10 ply tire will be a heavy tire that will not give you much benefit off-road other than making your fuel economy worst and giving your 4runner poor braking, poor handling, poor ride, etc..

The only time that i would recommend a 10 ply tire is IF you are towing a lot. That's it.
 
another thing to think about is that if you have 2 different size tires on the rear you will burn up the LSD diff in no time. Just somthing to remember.

LSD was not available on 3rd nor on 4th gen 4runners...so, this is not an issue.
 
If you have a Scangauge I believe you can correct for the larger sized tires. I know you could for the last car I owned
 
I upgraded the size of my tires to the 265/75 17 and left the spare stock. I had a tire go flat on me and had to use my spare. I had no problems with ATRAC or any other saftey device while driving. In fact I could barely notice much of a difference while driving. So from my experience this is not a problem.

This is true, but why would you be leaving your spare tire on the car for an extended period of time?

Yea, but that small of an upgrade doesn't really matter, especially with the sport with the XREAS suspension. I have a 2006 Sport with a 3/2 Cornfed Spacer lift and 33 inch mud grapplers and I don't really have any problem driving. As long as I don't try to swing a corner like I am in a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 I am perfectly fine.

regarding tire size, if i go with a 1" taller tire/wheel combo, will that save me gas and lower the rpm's being that the tire is rotating less but covering more ground?
i have 16's now and upgrading to 17's soon.
 
Looking to upsize to 20" wheels

I am considering buying a set of 20" 'Take Offs' from a 2016 4Runner with 245/60/20 tires. The price is right, I just need to make sure they will fit without further modifications. I have a 2006 4Runner Sport V6 2 Wheel Drive. Any help is greatly appreciated.
