bent valve?

so I'm buying a 95 sr5 limited auto with a 3vze but the thing is is the guy says that he was driving in some ice water and backed up into a big ice chunk crushing the end of the exhaust tip closed. he said he was able to drive it home but it has a loud metal on metal ticking. he said when he reved the engine the tick would go up with the rpm then stop for a second. he said he could hear it on the passenger side. when i went to look at it he had the intake manifold off so i couldn't start it. he said its a bent valve. what do you think.

I think you make him put the intake manifold back on so you can hear it run before you buy it.
