Best 3rd gen bumper?

Hey guys I got my 96 4runner sr5 4x4 back in the summer for 3,000. At direst I was just planning on driving it till I could afford something a little nicer. But I have since changed my mind and drive it till the wheels fall off. So now that I want to keep it I am going to do some upgrades starting with a lift and body lift. But my question is what do y'all guys think is the best bumper for a 3rd gen runner. I would preferalbly like one that's under $500 but I think I can stretch my budget to $650. I like the look and price of the trail gear bumper but they only have those for up to '95 models. I would like it to have some type of winch mount too. Thanks y'all for any help you can give me.

I believe Trail Gear makes a Tacoma bumper that will fit the 4runner with some minor modification.

I would be interested in more details on this. I emailed Allpro on their Taco bumper and they said that some have done it but really didnt have any more info than that. I think I searched around on a few different forums for actual mouning info and came up empty handed.

Also, after looking around at some different tube style bumpers I dont like how they expose a lot of the body components (i.e. lower fender sections, etc) that a plate style bumper would cover. It looks unfinished. What do people generally do about this? Cut and remove pieces, paint, or just leave ?

Check out Duhockey's tube bumper, it's pretty sweet. I know the main difference between the Taco and the 4runner is the 4runner's frame rails stick out ~2" father in the front so that's the difference when it comes to mounting.

I think most people with tube bumpers just live with the exposed stuff behind the bumper. I call that stuff the "death star".

It's 50/50 on what people do with a tube bumper. Some paint everything behind it black so it isnt as noticable. Brian is also correct about the main difference between mounting and that people have modified a Taco bumper to work on the 4 Runner plenty of times in the past. As far as other tube bumpers someone posted one from Savage Off-road that is designed for ours and looked pretty good in your budget.

I like the look of metaltechs wire grating they use to hide some of the UGLY. They don't make a bumper for the 4runner but I'm planning to copy their fjcruiser bumper design and use the grating to hide the ugly along with black paint.

Why does addicted charge 375 for the 1st gen bumper and 499 for the 3rd? They look exactly the same...

Hey there, I'm new to the forum, so forgive barging in on the conversation. I've got a question re: 97 rear bumper and you guys might have an idea for it. Would you know if I can put my '97 sr5 rear bumper on my '91 sr5. Neither have fender flares and vehicle specs state width has not changed from either generation (66.5"). My plan is put an "Irbis" steel bumper (out of Colorado) on the "97. I have no pics, yet. The '97 is brand new to me and the '91 has seen better days...rear-ended a few weeks ago. ;-(

No. Completely different mounting design and frame.
