I like the look of metaltechs wire grating they use to hide some of the UGLY. They don't make a bumper for the 4runner but I'm planning to copy their fjcruiser bumper design and use the grating to hide the ugly along with black paint.

Do you know if they have plans of making one for the 3rd gen? I dig that one too. Always liked the tubed front bumpers, but the exposed spots have always been an eyesore.

I doubt it. They tend to be more landcruiser oriented. It would be nice if they had one already designed for the 4runner but I'm hoping to get a local fabricator to duplicate that one as much as possible and the shipping will be alot cheaper :biggrin2:

I personally like the Allpro Taco bumper the best with the exception of the headlight hoops. When its time I will probably have a local 4wd shop fab something similar for the runner, already got a quote for $400.

I bet you could get addicted to custom build you one just like that, if manhunter's buddy doesn't start mass production.

any weldshop will build you any type of bumper in any design you like if you got the $$$, and really besides having it's own proper mount like the addicted one you can't really do much better then that, which if you had the $$$ you could do as well, that said there is a lot to be said about buying from a company of some sort, they got it down, you don;t have to leave your truck there for a number of days or weeks, the cost is far cheaper as all of the R&D has been done they have a jig and lazer or water jet cut steel in quantity.

i thought about going this route and if you got a buddy you can save a few bucks but for the most part, your better off just going with the flock like an
ARB,TJM,ADDICTED,SCHROCKWORKS,ect personally, i like my ARB, i got it cheap i was able to pick it from ARB directly (they ship from renton,wa) and it has be put on our runners a whole lot so i wasn't fighting with the thing trying to get it to fit, everyone else had made those mistakes before me and it was a very simple job to modify and put on.

i was leaning toward the shrockworks but it looked a little to slick and the wait time was horrible, imo, but if your willing to wait they are pretty sweet.

i really do like the idea addicted have about a whole new cross member/mount for the bumper....

But scotty's bumper I like the whole crossmember thing and it looks ok I'm thinking I could do a tiny bit of modding to his bumper and have. A badass tube/plate combo winch bumper for a reasonable price. Huumm this might be the next project to set back my regearing to 4.88's fund.

I think plate bumpers look better on our 4Runners because their body design, although over 10 years old, is still very modern and was years ahead of anything else from the late 90's. Tube bumpers belong on older trucks.

I don't know exactly what drove me towards the AOR tube bumper. I guess it was for the approach angle and BA look. I'm real happy with it and coupled with the Smitty Built I don't fear to many mud holes or nasty hills. Yeah you have to weld a bit but you gain SO much strength out of that crossmember. And I just love the look, I still do the neck breaker looking at it as I walk to the door at work. Ahh 4Runners, so glad someone already started that thread.





And this is after trimming some plastic and Hurculining it to match the fenders and I kept knocking the paint off (I take it though some pretty nasty brush)

Addicted Offroad is my recommendation. I loved mine

Weight is a factor, so if you have the stock suspension then a plate bumper is going to wear it out quicker. A lot of people do suspension and bumpers around the same time.

A tube bumper like Addicted's will be lighter.

The 'best' one is the one that suits your needs and preferences or is a best compromise between the two.

I needed a winch mount as well as something that made the most of approach angle and was much stronger than the bolt on options out there in terms of mounting. I needed something light and went with tube instead of plate, even though my personal preference in terms of looks is plate....but that's just me.

Figure out what's most important to you and choose accordingly. You may find that a bolt on option will be fine, or you may need to make it yourself or enlist the help of a fabricator to build your design from scratch.

I wouldnt be too worried about your suspension. An empty plate or tube bumper is going to add 100lbs max. I doubt you'll lose any more than 1/2" of height. It's only when you're adding a winch and aftermarket skid plates on top of a heavy bumper that it will start to become an issue. If you're really concerned about weight, there are some aluminum options out there that are very light and will still be much more durable than the factory "bumper".

As mentioned, choose whatever bumper you like. There's a thread on here that has a pretty comprehensive list of all of the bumpers available for our trucks.
