Best 4WD system of 4runners

Ugh..... No he doesn't get what you're saying. No one does because it doesn't make any sense. Put the v6 in four wheel drive and forget about the goddamn switch if 4wd is going to save you from "black ice" as you say. Which 4wd will do zero for you anyways.

^^^This. You can literally leave the v6 in ''full time 4wd'' mode all day/night/week/month/year/decade if you want. It is the exact same as the v8, except that you can run in 2wd if you want as well.

But if you don't want to ever run in 2wd, you don't have to.

At least that's how I understand it to be as well.

Look guys, haha, I understand all of that. This thread is simply about comparing 4WD systems. All I'm saying is that the V8 full time system is ready to handle things sooner than the V6 system. How many V6 owners here leave their truck in 4Hi all the time? I'm simply saying that an unexpected need for 4WD may turn up where the driver isn't quick enough to switch in time. And yes, you have better chances maintaining control hitting a patch of black ice in 4WD than RWD.

A V8 4wd cannot choose to do 2wd donuts like a V6 4wd can.

Holy crap, objectivity anyone?!?! I mean the question is subjective enough (what is "best"), the least you can do is answer objectively. Granted, this post is in a 4th gen forum and i will agree that all versions of the 4th gen are very capable but objectively, based on facts, i still say the 1999 T4R Limited with rear diff lock is hands down the best 4runner ever made. My reasons include highest factory ground clearance, locking rear differential, 1st gen ATRAC, full time 4wd mode (awd), manual transfer case (iirc vacuum actuated) 3.4l v6 (very reliable if a little underpowered, waaaay better than the old 3.0), and arguably the best aftermarket support of any T4R. The last one is a little subjective but you get the picture. I think the v8 availability in the 4th gen is a great engine option but in no way impacts its 4wd capabilitities, even among other 4th gens. 5th gens give up too much capability with only a part time system and 1st and 2nd gens are hampered with the same problem in addition to manually locking hubs. Again, 99 Limited with rear locker is a beast!

I think the whole thing with black ice is that none of your wheels have traction meaning the best thing to do is let off the gas and coast (don't touch the brakes) so its doesn't really matter if your in 4wd or 2wd. The 4wd does come in handy after the black ice puts you in the ditch tho

Not to added to the "clue in" party but any v6 owner has the choice to be full time or part time 4wd. That's why that system is better, it leaves more options to the driver

If I had the option to buy a v8 with the v6 4wd system I would have, hell who doesn't want to burn a little rubber every now and them. But I don't and I'm stuck with FT and no burnouts, but thats ok, it saves my money so I can put it in the gas tank haha. Also, I have heard of v6 members leaving it in 4hi (center diff. open) all the time, gas mileage change isn't that significant.

EDIT: As for the best 4wd system...how about early 1st gens with solid axles front and rear...old school and tough. And not really to do with the 4wd system but coupled with a manual transmission...thats the beast!

Then it wouldn't matter because you wouldn't spin out! What is it with you and black ice? Did a patch of black ice touch you as a kid? Did the big mean black ice quarter back make fun of you in high school? Or did the black ice steal your gf at some point? Lol jeeze man, this topic is about 4wd systems, not what if scenarios involving black ice!!!!

It is NOT a part-time system!!!!

The 5th gen sr5 and TE have a part-time system. A part-time system has no transfer case. When you put a part-time system into 4WD, the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed.

That is not the case with the 4th gen v6. If you want to, you can leave the v6 in 4WD all the time and it behaves EXACTLY like the V8 system. The V6 does everything that the V8 system does, plus it has one more option.

Honestly, did you even read my post? I'm not taking anything away from the V6. I am simply saying that it is a part-time system, being that it is not full-time like the V8. With the V6, you have to DECIDE FOR YOURSELF when to put it into 4WD. Sure, that's easy when it's snowing out, but not so easy when you're doing 70 mph down the dry interstate toward that slick oil spot in the lane that is about to throw you out of control. If you were already in 4WD, which chances are low if you're in the V6, you wouldn't have had a problem. Get what I'm saying now?

Honestly, you have no clue. Buy yourself a V6. The very first time you get in, put it in 4WD. Leave it in 4WD forever. And guess what, you have he same behavior as the V8 system. Exactly the same behavior.

I dont know which system is the best, but I dont get the argument that you can put it into 2wd making it better system. If you had another option to run it in 1wd would it make it even better ????

I would have prefered and would have chosen the 4 x 4 V6 Torsen system for my 2007 Sport V8... if it were available WITH the V8. :

However... there is NO way I would have chosen the V6 over the V8!

Even with the 4 x 4 system with the V8, I feel as if I have one heck of a top quality vehicle, with virtually the same engine and drive train as a similar Lexus of the same model year, at a fraction of the cost of the Lexus or Landcruiser.

The V8 engine rocks!

And the 4 x 4 Torsen system is no slouch either. :cheers:
