Best All Around A/T tire for 4runner?

This may seem like a strange request but I like the agressive look of BFG AT and Goodyear Duratracs and even the Nitto Trail Grapplers, but I do 95% driving on the street and wet. 2-3 trips to the snow in California on mostly plowed roads.

Looking for the agressive look but also want good traction in wet and dry. I know if I want the best traction go with Michelins LTX but I really like the agressive look of the 3 mentioned. I have a set of Spidertrax coming this week and will install them with what ever tire I get.

So what would be a good "Off Road Poser" tire for a city slicker like me??

From what I understand the duratracs will have the best road manners out of those three choices and would be your best bet.

If you haven't already, I would go to Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and browse their comparison chart, you can see all of the top rated tires in the different categories. Honestly when it comes to tires and asking which is the best you are going to get contradicting answers from everyone because we all have our preferences.

I think you should find a tire on tirerack that has high ratings in the categories you need and just go with that one.

Take a look at Kumho Roadventure though, they seem to be getting good ratings.

Good luck and post pics when you get some new shoes for your 4Runner.

I had Revo 1's on my 1995 4Runner and they were definitely a good tire, although a lot of people had trouble with tread wear, it's a softer tire than some of the other popular choices but it had benefits too, nice in the winter.

I'm the first to admit I'm a "City Offroad Poser". I really like the look of the BFG AT all be it a heavier tire. I did check Tire Rack and read all the reviews but most talk about mixed use on and offroad or snow etc.

I know the A/T will wear faster as an all pavement tire but as stated 95-98% or more of my driving in on the freeway or around town. Just want the agressive look and lift of the A/T tread design even if I'm only a Pavement Runner

Since this being my first Runner I'd thought I'd ask the group.

I'll post the before and afters with the Spidertrax later this week.

GY Wrangler SilentArmor (slightly more off-road oriented) or Michelin LTX AT-2(slightly more on-road oriented). Michelin regular LTX and Bridgestone REVO are too mild for what you want.

Duratracs and BFG AT KO are too much for your needs.

KO's. 40k on them and I've only been on a surface other than pavement for all of 10mins. They destroy the snow and have plenty of grip in the wet. They look killer with white walls out on the SE.

I'm in the exact same predicament as you are. My gut tells me to go with the Michelin but heck, I want that aggressiveness! Trying to sift thru all the picture threads with suspension/ tire setups and the pro's and con's, then finding a reputable local shop to install it. Decisions, decisions!

The siping on them does not go the full depth of the tread so at a certain point they become MT's essentially. Furthermore, I have heard issues on the highway about sidewall flex. They are only ~ 3 years old now and, IMO, don't have the proven history of a tire like the KO's.

The fact that the KO is the most popular AT tire for years and are difficult to get due to supply shortages says something.

I think it's all relative. If you respect the fact that they're AT tires you'll be fine. Hydroplaning is only an issue at highway speeds if it's actually pouring outside (so hard the wipers are useless) and even then - I've never done it. YMMV.

Really....no-one mentioned the Hankook Dynapro ATMs? Great on/off road tire and no road noise!!!

I have the ATMs and the longer I have them the less I'm impressed. They've gotten much louder and wet traction (mainly breaking) has gotten worse as well. It's not to the point it's dangerous, but I've has the traction control kick in several times when braking. I've got just under 30k miles on them. Good news is they are wearing great and do well overall for an at tire, just don't know that I'll buy then again.

A lot of great advice thanks to all. I did see pics of both these two trucks and this is the agressive look and stance I going for. I assume the max for both would be 265/70 on my 17" rims with Spidertrax and 2in lift.
