Best Bang for the Buck sound improvement 07' Sport ?

I'll be keeping my 07' Sport for a few more years as I just bought it off lease.

I've never been a fan of the sound quality of the speakers.

I'm looking for suggestions to improve the sound and get the best bang for the buck.

Is it worth changing out the speakers without changing the head unit ?

I would always suggest replacing the H/U before replacing the speakers. I have seen many instances where people have been happy with just a h/u upgrade because it significantly affects the sound dynamics of the vehicle.

Why not upgrade it all? Just save up a bit more money and you'll be leaps and bounds happier.

How would I know it is JBL or not ?

Nothing with JBL logo. Just the stock premium with 6 CD changer according to the original sticker.

If it is a JBL,it will have Synthesis on the front of the radio below the tuner buttons.You will also have a tag on each door on each speaker grill and a subwoofer in the right rear.

if u dont have the JBL, (check behind rear pass. seat for sub), u can pickup a scion HU fairly cheap, its a direct plug in & some say sounds much better. http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6339&highlight=jbl

OK, so no JPL tags, no Sub woofer.

I'm dealing with the non-JBL.

Now what about the RDS or no-RDS ?

You need to get a budget in mind, and set a goal for sound and features.

I just ordered new speakers for my 07 SR5 non-JBL, I got speakers first because when I do the head unit I will be installing an amp at the same time...you will need speakers for that.

I ordered Infinity components for the front and two ways for the rear, both 6.5 inch. I had these in my Durango, and they sounded really good even off the factory deck. When I upgraded to a Kenwood HU, the sound was great, for a budget system without an amp or sub.

BTW, price for the two pairs of speakers was $160 shipped from amazon, just the pair of components go for 199 on crutchfield.

My goal for this truck is to add a sub, amps and a touchscreen DVD w/ headrest monitors for the kids.

You might consider speakers or HU first, either way will be an improvement, BUT I would think that doing both (even if in time) will be a great improvement over the lackluster sound of the non_JBL systems. My 2005 w/ JBL actually sounds pretty decent overall...but the Kenwood-Infinity in the 2007 is going to BLOW the JBL away!


EDIT: RDS is the radio data that you get w/ fm stations (artist, song etc..) I believe it can also be used as a public warning system???

problem with getting new speakers first is if u get fairly cheap ones that cant take more power than the stock HU has & maybe just dont sound that good with it, may have to be changed again if u do ever decide to upgrade to a better HU at a later date.

I will be adding it into my build thread, and will put a link in my sig. There are a couple of speaker install threads w/ pics currently. One thing to note is that the factory fronts are 6x9s, so when you switch to a 6.5 inch you need the adapter bracket. Some people make their own, but I went ahead and bought this one.... I expect a slightly better sound out of the new speakers, but the real difference will be when I put the new HU and amp....I did speakers first knowing that I am upgrading the others sooner than later.

Here are links to the speakers, I think they are a GREAT price for the quality of Infinity. I have owned Infinity before and they are very good for the price. Yes Focals, JLs and others are better, but I have a budget to stick to for this system.

I've had the 6.5 inch in all 4 Dodge Durango doors and the sound was very good, I expect the same to be true w/ the 4Runner. I am going to round out the system w/ a 10inch sub for the lows.

I have no idea if these would work or not, but maybe someone has experience w/ this setup? BTW the amazon fitment guide is not very accurate for the 4runner.

I have the same set (actually, older version of the 6.5" -- 6020cs), and the same Scosche brackets, for my 4Runner. I haven't installed them yet.

If you've installed them -- did you mount the crossovers inside the front doors? I'm curious if there's room in there (the crossovers are large) to mount them, and if so, where you mounted them.

I haven't yet, I am offshore working for the next two weeks. When I get home I will be putting in the front and rears. My fronts will be the components and the backs are two way full range. I know the Infinitys sound nice because I have owned them before. I will share my install tips/tricks when I do the job.

So to the OP, what are you thinking about doing? :shrug:

I noticed on my 4runner (with JBL) that i have two small grills on the top side of the door for a tweeter i suppose but mine doesnt have anything in it. Have any of you gone with componets and used that location for the tweeters? Im just curious why Toyota would go to the trouble to add a mounting location but not install the speakers.

My SR5 non JBL and my Limited w/ JBL (10 speaker system), both have components in the front.

The replacements I ordered, Infinity, for the front are components as well.

So you have tweeters in those top tweeter locations by the dash on the limited?

4 speakers in front doors (two are tweeters), 5th is center channel on dash, 6th and 7th are back door full range, 8th and 9th are in the cargo area up high by the hatch, and the 10th is the sub. Thats the JBL setup in my Limited.

My SR5 only has a 6 speaker system, if you count the tweeters from the components as separate speakers. Regardless, the SR5 aftermarket system will blow the JBL away when I am done with it :naughty:
