best budget option for lifting 2wd for non-offroad?

hey folks,

I want to put a mild lift on my 2001 2WD 4runner limited. I read the lifting thread/FAQ, and from what I gather, the cheapest option is a leveling kit with a 1.5" to 2.5" lift. Is that right?

I don't plan on doing any offroading, other than driving on the beach occasionally, so I don't think I need the diff drop or any of that other rigamarole.

Also, what's the biggest tires I can run on my stock 16" rims?

any recommendations for particular kits?

If you want budget then throw some pucks under it. You're 2WD so you don't have a front differential. You can run 33s easily, might rub a little and need some trimming though.

32" tires or 265/75/r16's is about as big as you can go without any rubbing at stock height. I think some models with larger/smaller fender flares might be able to run a bit bigger, especially if you don't plan on offroading. If you lift, then 33" plus or tire sized like 285/75/r16's are a possibility (not sure if they fit on stock rims though), but that might be a bit big for 2WD gears. Might make it sluggish.

I'm not very experience with lifts though, so I'll let others speak to that part.

A set of 99 coils would give you about an inch. Add a 1 inch body lift and you should be set for 32" tires without any rubbing. What part of FLA are you in? I have some 99 rear coils in the garage and some 99 front coils coming off soon. If you want to go further a rear locker would set you up nice for some beach time.

Spacer lift or body lift would be the cheapest options. With 2" lift, you should be able to run 33's without much fuss. 285/75r16, 305/70r16 or 255/85r16.

I have some 99 rear coils in the garage and some 99 front coils coming off soon. If you want to go further a rear locker would set you up nice for some beach time.

Tell me more about these 99 coils? What exactly are they? How much of a lift would that be? When are they coming off your truck?

It's an old post so I didn't bother replying, but that's EXACTLY the amount of lift and tire size I want. Any idea what tire size he's running? My stock tires need replaced so now's the time. I figure I might as well do it all at once. replace tires, coils, body lift too?

It also looks like the poster in the thread shaved his rear mud guards? I like the look. can someone point me to a thread about what he did there?

Looks like 285 duratracs to me. I don't think those 99 springs are going to net you quite as much lift as the guy in that thread. Might still need spacers. Obviously, he got OME lift with spacers up front, which is around 3" front and rear.

Oh - from looking at the 3rd gen pics. It looks like most of you have removed the running boards. I think I'm going to do that too. I don't have kids that I need to shuffle around or anything like that - I don't even drive anywhere most of the time since I work from home. So I have no interest in practicality!!

thanks! so you're saying in addition to the 99's install spacers. That's what they call a leveling kit or suspension lift on some sites right? Like these I saw online?

I would personally go with the lift setup from the thread over spacers. I ran spacers for a long while and then switched to proper coils. The ride difference was night and day. But in the end it just depends on what you want since you are paying for it.
