Best engine to swap a 3.0 with?

Thinking of swapping my 3.slow in my 94.. I want something that has good acceleration but gets decent gas mileage. I don't want any thing fancy, just a solid motor that can get me around and in good time. Any suggestions?

tons of info out there on this subject, but a 3.4 makes the most sense cuz its a bolt in swap, just need to do wiring and exhaust (assuming its a manual, auto's are a little trickier).
3.4's are not friendly on gas though

edit: just read in your signature that you have an auto, so you'd have to either swap to a manual or buy a t-case adaptor and find an auto 3.4 with trans.

Fundamentally, good acceleration and good gas mileage are diametrically opposed. No matter what kind of "MPG rating" a motor has, if you mash the pedal and accelerate quickly, you kill your MPG rating....Pick your poison, is what I say.......go to a 22re and tenderfoot it, or throw in a Chevy 350 and stomp away!!!

Here is some math for ya....if you get 20 mpg and drive 5000 miles a year at $3.50 per gallon, that's $875 per year, apox. in gas. If you get a motor that's 25mpg you save less than $200 per year in gas, if you get a motor that's 28mpg you save aprox. $250 per year.......if you spend $2500 on the motor swap, a savings of $250 a year in gas will take 10 years to pay off, 25mpg will take 14 years.

If up to the fabrication task do a straight six of some kind; that would be sick.

What is the budget?

MASSIVE fabrication work here--the truck's front end simply isn't long enough. A V8 requires mounting the fan outside the engine compartment, and that's after moving the whole drivetrain backward a few inches. Your I-6 is two cylinders longer still--not a good idea, friend.

Maybe not the best of ideas but still... you could (in simple terms) do a body lift and tilt the motor back enough to mount to the trans. or move the motor back in the compartment enough to clear the rad.(which involves, like you said to move the trans back a few inches which means shorting the drive shaft to the rear and elongating the front drive shaft. among other things...)

Or mount the radiator somewhere else like in the back of the truck and get long radiator hoses and electric fans...

Yes I know its a lot of work but with a welder and some time/cash anything is possible...and something different.
