Best Highway tire?

I have Yoko's on my 4 Runner now and do not like them. Very loud and poor winter traction. Treadwear is fine but I would not buy them again.

Which Michelin tire and what size would you suggest for TX driving?

Michelin LTX M/S2 have used this on a crossover in chicago before, it worked great, dont know if i need it for TX rain.

Pretty equal tires that tradeoff various attributes between each other, so it's a matter of what's most important to you.

I'm on the hunt for new tires by ex fall winter and in addition to Michelins and Silent Armors (service rated with snowflake symbol) have heard/read good things about Continental LX20Eco for long treadwear highway tires at a lower cost than the proven (but pricey) Michelins. Also contemplating Coopers - another economical alternative that, I believe, is even made in the USA.

Anyone around here ever tried the Contis or Cooper Discoverer AT3s?

I'm with you on that. Michelin CTs are awesome. I have them on my T4R, they are awesome on the highway. They also perform well on wet roads, and can handle snow as well. The Dunflops on the GX need to be replaced before winter, will most likely replace them with Michelin CTs. The only other contender is the Goodyear Fortera Triple Tread.

I wouldn't buy Michelins, they are terrible tires! My '04 just had a set of Michelins installed in December before I bought it and they are nothing but trouble. The tread looks big and chunky but the part between the tread is thin and easily punctured by any little thing. One of my tires had a staple stuck in it, that's right a staple, and when I pulled it out it went "Pssssssst"! I had to take it back to Discount Tire to have it replaced. The ride is pretty good on the highway and fairly quiet unless I hit a bump but they tend to want to follow grooves or joints in the road so it's always pulling to the left or right unless the surface is perfectly smooth with no joints. My Toyota pickup had a set of Michelins on it in the '80's and they were horrible too. They must have had 4-5 punctures in each tire over their life. After a while they wouldn't hold air and I had to put tubes in 2 of them! I would never get Michelins again.

Got it, what if I am impartial to mileage and I just want a smoother ride? Would the bigger tires help me there?

That's going to be more dependent on the particular tire than a small difference in size. It's hard to argue against the tire the vehicle was engineered around.

265/70/17 is a much more common size and should be easier to find and less expensive. It will alter odo and speedo a little, but also make your mpg display more accurate by reducing the exaggeration.

As far as Texas driving, I notice the Latitude Tour HP is H speed rated. Not sure if that is included in the choices, but if so, that would be my choice.

Firestone Destination series. Nothing but great things from me about them. took me 50,000 on the 4runner with the LE's in them with not one problem, and 48,000 on the AT's on our frontier:hatsoff:

Just saw this thread, I'm in southern Oregon, enough snow and rain to take it into consideration. Wanted GYSA, bought Destination A/T 265/70. Less than 10,000 on these, happy.

I ran the Rugged Terrains on my Colorado, and they were a great tire. They were certainly 10x better than the crappy stock General's that wore out in 20k miles!

Right now I am running Stampede Radial SUV on my Runner, no reports on mileage yet, but I did find some receipts in the glove box from the previous owner and he got about 40k out of them before needing replacement. I think that's pretty good considering they are 130 bucks a tire!

Hopefully this link works. They are a highway tire actually, but with the looks of at a/t.

Check out the reviews and surveys of them on tire rack. My father in law has then on his truck. Definately look nice to go along with the good reviews/etc.
