Best location for microphone for Bluetooth system?

I've searched around and seen several of the locations that people have chosen to put their microphone for their Bluetooth installs but I'm wondering which one is the best for wind-noise and call quality.

I'm looking at two primary places:
1) Just in front of the speedometer inside the circular trim
2) Near the map lights on the roof

Option 1 is definitely a little easier because no removal of the A-pillar or snaking the wire up there, but I'm planning on doing the map light mod and it is really only 10 minutes less time. The location seems pretty much unblocked to my head but it is a little further than other locations.

Option 2 is easy to do when I do the map light mod and gets it a bit closer to my head. I am worried about wind noise with the sun-roof open though.


Any preferences guys on where you think it should go? Is there a spot I'm not thinking about that is better than these two options?

I, on the other hand wanted one directly in line of site with my mouth so that I do not have to tilt my head at all and just drive normally. I installed next to my gauge cluster using a rubber bushing that I purchased from FRYS. Man, it works like a charm. People hear my voice with no issues, even with the windows down. It's also an easy location for installation. Just a suggestion:

Mine is up by the rear view mirror. It's a relatively new Pioneer Bluetooth setup and the people I've talked to several people over it and they all say it sounds great. You don't have to tilt your head or raise your voice LOL

Hey, I like the idea of the rubber grommet mount. That probably really helps to cut down on outside noise and works well. I'll try and see if I can find a similar one for mine. Guess that means I need to go to a store before I start. Not going to Fry's though because it is 45 minutes from me and I hate that place.

I have mine above the steering wheel, clipped to the circular trim surrounding the speedometer. It's convenient because the wire runs directly into the steering column over to the head unit, very minimal routing of the wires. Plus, it's positioned nicely for my voice to direct towards the microphone. Haven't had any issues since December.

Yup, that's about where I have mine, too. Steering wheel, right next to the Scangauge II. Seems to work fine there. I ran the wire back behind the dash and up the side of the steering column.

I wanted mine to be inconspicuous so it is mounted on the steering column behind the latch to adjust the tilt. You cannot see it unless you are looking for it. I've never had any issues with callers having trouble hearing me. I wanted something away from any possible wind noise and I think the foot well does a good job of isolating my voice.
