Best mods to increase MPG

I mentioned theI don't know about anyone else, but when I put it into neutral at a stop my RPM's go up. If the RPM's go up I have to assume that more gas is being used. I also thought that the air/fuel mixture was kept constant by the ECM. I have to admit though I don't know squat about these things I'm just going off of what I perceive things to be.CJ3Flyr said:

Please do not yell at me, I'm learning...and again, just tying to do right by my Ruffian, but also improve performance.
Once I've saved up, I'll do the expensive mods with the intake and exhaust.
I do notice a difference in using the gas that's higher in octane than the 87. Not much, maybe only 40 miles, but that is two extra days of work commute for me.

My 2 cents is that the FloBlade won't do much for you and unless it fits perfectly it may harm the engine. The harm would come if the install of the FloBlade caused something on the filtered side of air filter leak in dirty air. The swirling motion may help an engine of a different design than your 4Runner. Carburetors and what's called throttle-body-injection may benefit from stirring up the air. On your Toyota the fuel doesn't get into the airstream until the air is right next to the intake valve, which is pretty far down the line. In all likelihood all swirling would be gone by that point in time. I think all it would do for you is restrict the airflow a little bit and cut into your full-throttle performance. I think I'll give them a try for a tank of gas, and see what sort of things change on the runner. Right now, because it is winter, I can't see how telling the computer that the air is cold, when the air IS cold, should make much of a difference. I also think that during summer, when the air is NOT cold, would put you more at risk of doing damage.
I've bought a higher quality air filter from Burtman Industries, and I feel that is the safest start.
Of course, I'll keep tabs on the milage, and I'll post my experiment here. I'd love to read where someone else has done this, kinda like a buy-it-try-it deal they do on the news here in Sacramento. I'll take photos too.

When you go from Drive to Park or Neutral at a light it is only natural that the RPM's go up. You have removed the load of the transmission and brakes (holding you still) from the engine. Be assured, just because the RPM's increase YOU ARE NOT BURNING MORE FUEL in Park or Neutral.

If you watch the tach and listen as you go from 'D' to 'N' it looks and sounds as though the tach may be headed for 1000-1100rpm; the computer then adjusts timing and throttle plate/fuel to hold the rpm at 700+/-. I postulate that the fuel required to idle in 'D' is similar to holding the throttle slightly to create a 1000-1100rpm fast idle. Assuming that my interpretation of the initial rpm rise when you place it in 'N' is correct then it's the computers adjustment that allows the idle to settle at 700+/- rpm and save fuel.
Don't misinterpret, my idle never gets as high as 1000-1100rpm when I shift from 'D' to 'N', that's just my interpretation of what the initial trend would do if the computer didn't step in...
Another benefit is the couple of extra rpm in 'N' allows my A/C to blow a touch colder. (I had too throw that in 'cause I'm so jealous of you guys playing in the snow... Florida does have a few advantages, needing A/C in January is one of them :bigok: )

I agree...the biggest fuel saver is a modified right foot.
When my wife was driving our '97 Runner, we were getting 16 mpg (she's a stoplight racer...), but now that I'm driving it (like an old man), I'm seeing 20 mpg.
