Best Performance Upgrades

Hey guys just bought a 96 4runner 3.4L 4x4. Its all stock and want to know the best upgrades I should start with. Just purchased a cold air intake and filter and will be installing that next week. Whats the next best thing chip and cat back system?
Which brand is the best?

If you want the single greatest performance improvement and don't mind paying a pretty penny for it, add a TRD Supercharger ($2000.00) and a 7th Injector Kit ($1000) to your 4Runner. This adds a 100hp to that 3.4L! Bark those tires shifting into 2nd gear baby!

Deckplate mod is the cheapest 7ish whp you can net and it's much cheaper than a filter kit which nets the same hp. Return the CAI kit and spend the $$ elsewhere. Catback is more of a sound mod but it's one I want to do soon but you do net a little more oomph in the mid range but it's not a lot.
 
Removing unnecessary stuff like, air elbow, cleaning MAF sensor, etc. Basically, cleaning your engine from dust/dirt would help alot. You will noticed extra hp that will release the full power of your T4R. I really plan to take every piece of my engine out and wipe it clean but afraid that i can't put it back in anymore. But i'll try to take apart my interior and try to redesign a new look. Getting some suede carpet for doorpanel and other goods. Going to work on it this summer so hopefully it'll work out great.
 
Upgrades

Yea I think I would love to throw the super charger on there but I better pay the truck off 1st!! Looking for the cheaper mods for now. But yea I was reading the reviews thats some crazy horse power that thing puts out.

I was researching as well about having to reset the ecm after putting the cold air in. Is that true or does it have to be done certain times? I still have the factory radio so I guess that helps..

So what else thats street legal. No Chip I hear that. Some cars ive heard its great other its a wammy. What do you guys think about the header?

Like I said I got the cold air on the way and some clear lenses for the bumper. Its a cheaper after market one.

WOW! i wish my engine was as clean as that! i don't even go offroad yet my engine is soo dusty. but your 4runner looks almost exactly like mine but mine is a gold edition and yours is silver. plus, my fender trim is black and not chrome. but yes, you should get a supercharger if you think it's worth it and feel the need for speed.

after you get the CAI, it's usually best to pull out the chip so the computer would reset. when it resets, it'll get a better air flow which the signal will go to the computer so it would release the most hp from your CAI.
 
Headers without the SC produce a small gain but the install price is going to be a lot since they are a PITA to install.
 
DECK PLATE vs cold air

Why is everyones doing the deck plate mod over the cold air.
Offroading? Or just cheaper?

Yea i was looking at the room in there around the manifold and it looks like headers would be an awful tight fit...
 
Deckplate mod costs about $15 for the same dyno proven HP or you can just remove the elbow on the side of the filter box for free.
I like the deckplate since you can close it back up for any reason you might need too.

And also, the cold air intake will make your filter extremely dirty which you MUST clean it frequently or else you would lose hp.
 
degrease your engine bay, and when it dries, put that foaming tire dressing on it to make it shiny. Thats what the dealerships use.

HMM! that's a great idea. i have a foamy degrease for my engine bay but it doesn't seem to clean the engine very much. but when i use a foamy tire spray, it sure do make my tires sparkle alittle bit. i'll try it out sometimes.

When i bought my 2001 4Runner, the engine was clean enough to eat off of, lol. I asked my friend that is a Finance Manger at Dodge, and he said the detailers use foaming tire shine on the engines. Ive done it a few times on my other cars, and its makes it purrrty!

Engine Brite

Yeah that gunk stuff has always worked on cars that I have owned. Im sure the pic above of mine wont look like that for 2 long... They had that thing detailed to the max not even any grease or gunk on the block anywhere!
 
I had to login just to reply to this pic =P Dude, the engine that came with my 2001 SR5 4runner was this clean exactly, 42 days after buying it find out my rings and valves were fried and had to replace the engine with one that looked 6 times nastier than this. Runs perfect and flawlessly with an UUUUUGly engine now LOLOL
