Best place to buy new key/fob? (2010 TE)

Hi Everyone,

I just picked up my new (to me) 2010 TE and found out that I only have 1 key.

I really would like to have a spare or 2. Does anyone have a good source for spare keys/fobs that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

I have seen the ebay ones, but I don't want to waste my money on something that doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

(It's the 3 button remote, if that makes a difference)

Also the FCC number on the back of the remote is unreadable, is that going to complicate things???

You'd better get the other 2 from the previous owner! You don't want other copies floating around out there for anyone to use to steal it.

Spare Keys

I bought a blank key from Autotransponder.com for $21. The 3 Button remote is about $188. You may want to just get a key only.

The problem is getting the key cut and programmed. I was able to have a junk yard key guy cut it for $2. The problem is the programming. The dealer wanted $75. Some locksmiths can program the new key too but charge a lot.

I ended up buying a cable and disk on ebay for the Toyota TIS system for $28 and programmed it myself.

A lot of messing around but it worked and kept me under $50.

There are posts on this forum about the TIS cable and program. With that you can also reprogram some of the custom settings like seat belt alarm, cabin light duration and others.

i agree, we thought about that. we actually live over 1000 miles from where the original owner traded it in, so i think we will be ok.

it just sucks that no one mentioned there was only 1 key (i also didn't think to ask) until the deal was done.

we may try the techstream route, thanks for the tip!

if you bought from the dealership DEMAND a 2nd key. I have had to do that with 2 past vehicles... both times I got the key and had it programmed for free. 1 key is BS!

Call around, dealer wanted $300.00, found a shop that did the electronic key for $200.00.

If you are going to pick up the blank yourself, make sure to check which kind of key your 2010 model uses because the transponder chips in there are different and not interchangeable. It's either a "." or a "G" stamped on the stem like so:

^^ This . Went to buy a used Camry from a dealer for my son to use at college . Right before I signed the contract the salesman came out with 1 key and said that's all there is . I said "no second key, no signing the check " . He says" is this going to be a deal breaker" ? I said " yep" .
The sales manager sent the salesmen down the road to the Toyota dealer to get another key and fob .
I signed and wrote the check after I had both keys in my hand .

Another big thing to note is, is the key black or grey? If it's grey, I feel for ya. Just went through this with a Camry. It was costly only having the grey valet key and no master key. The dealer had to wipe the keyless entry computer and reseed it and program all 3 keys. Apparently it can only be done once then you have to buy a new ecm. I think I paid around 250 to have it all done. If yours is black, you're in luck and they can erase the old and program the new with it..

I was about to pull the trigger on this key from amazon


Our key has the "G" on it, and not the dimple... This key would not have worked.

um the OP is talking about a replacement due to only 1 key at PURCHASE... If he bought a car with only a valet key he has bigger issues.... if you lost your master key that is your stupidity and you got ass raped.... seems pretty simple to me, let me know if you need me to draw stick figures for you. I know you 4th GEN guys are a little slow

You know, when a car gets repo'd, for instance, they usually aren't detailed and have everything sitting there in a nice little package on the front seat waiting on you. Shit happens, and I was merely explaining a potential situation based on one I've experienced. Call it ass raping if you want, but when a car is a deal it's a deal.

Thanks for the info...now I feel silly since my 2011 SR5 only came with one key :/ would really like to get another made without spending a bunch of money on it
