Best snow tire for 04 T4R

Need to get a set of snow tires for New England winters. Had factory tires last winter and was tremendously disappointed. Could get going fine, but a turn in the road at 25 mph sent the truck sliding and made the truck's safety features go into overdrive. Not what I expected! My brother's '93 Ford Explorer - with aggressive tires - handled the snow WAY better, and that just ain't right.
We travel up to Maine (home state, best in the US... LOL), NH, and VT regularly. Need an aggressive, competent tire to get me and a young, precious family through the worst Mother Nature can dole out.
TireRack folks slam both the REVO and the Bridgestone KOs... and I'd thought those two were the best... What's the real scoop?

I just checked the front page of their site. I see the winter/snow testing they did. However, those are not the same tires that most on this site are referring to.

For instance, the Bridgestone A/T Dueler Revos are not snow tires but rather all-terain. Their purpose is to handle both offroad and onroad duty for a light truck including different types of weather conditions.

I would encourage you to check the site for specific tire and see what others have to say. I know that for the Revos they are highly regarded. They are not slammed as you put it.

However, if you are looking for ONLY a snow tire than that is a different kettle of fish. Simply punch in your preferences and their site should give you a good starting selection of snow tires to consider.

Bridgestone (Blizzak DM-Z3) or Michelin (Latitude X-Ice) single purpose snow tires are the only way to go up here in NE if you have the bucks. I tend to prefer Michelins but they are probably comparable. For less money you can go with Cooper snows (with our without studs). The new technology, soft compund tires are almost as good as studs on ice but way less noisy and last longer than studded tires.

Going with 4WD is never an issue. It is the stops and turns that demand real snow tires.

I had the same experience with the factory Dunflops. Search the forums about tires.
I personally went with BFG A/T KO's on steel wheels. The are an A/T tire but have the "snowflake" rating as a snow tire. They are also a little noisy but I can live with that for the winter.

Thank you both very much for weighing in. I just want to make sure I make an educated decision - because my heart and ego wanted the big, aggressive tires. But I think I'll go with the Blizzacks.

I guess I should have said, Folks who've posted on TireRack, not TireRack folks, have slammed the Revos. Here's two reviews by people driving either T4Rs or Tacomas; I wanted to guage responses from people driving same/similar trucks.

1998 Toyota Tacoma 4wd Xtra Cab: Running these on both my Tacoma and my wifes 4Runner. Mine are noisy and wear unevenly, even with constant rotating and aligning. My wifes didnt even make two thirds through the warranty before having to be replaced. At least the second set were prorated. Im going back to my Michelin ATs. Bought them because of how they were rated here. I guess the Bridgestone guys filled out the first reviews. -- Review Submitted 2005-09-29

2000 Toyota Tundra Limited 4wd: Tires started out with great wet traction and low noise. Within less than 20K miles, tire started to wear unevenly and got VERY noisy. YES, tires were rotated and balanced and ft/end was aligned (had it checked). Dealer said truck doesnt like aggressive treads. Will shortly replace due to noise and poor wet traction (still plenty of tread left). -- Review Submitted 2005-09-27

To be fair, there were two positive reviews from Tacoma and Tundra drivers, but they were from the south...

Not that it matters since you will be purchasing snow tires but the survey results of 1,700 + users and their 19 million miles shows the Revos are pretty good tires.

True, the vehicles are of all kinds but it seems to me a tire that pulls these kind of reviews has earned its superior reputation.

yea... I was looking at those reviews too. Much better then the Michelin cross-terrains. Each tire and manufacturer will always have customers with bad experiences.

People have complained about our 4runners.. how come we still have one?

I ditched the Dunlops at 12k miles, for a set of Revos. I went thru the winter last year here in the mtns of western NC, and they never missed a step. I have a very steep driveway,and I've gone up it with 10" of new snow, and never spun a tire. The only accomodation I made was to lock the center diff. Theyarfe not winter rated tires, but they are awesome in the snow. I have approx. 19k miles with no descernable wear. GREAT TIRES!!:girl:

I have two winters on my REVO's, (getting ready for the third) here in upstate NY, and I couldn't be happier with them. Great wet traction, noise is not a problem, and no problems in the snow. Only got stuck once (almost) in hub deep mud, but was able to back out.

I use them for winter only. Leave the OEM Bridgestone H/Ts on for summer. About 12k on them so far, wear is also good.

I wouldn't hesitate to get them again.

But a little light isn't so bad when you find out that Toyota wants $120 US for the little transmitters (each). I have a set of wheels coming for my rig and I was going to add the TPMS sensors but not after I found out what they cost. Maybe if I can find some on eBay...

In the end, after literally hours of deliberation and getting to the checkout with snow tires in my "carriage," I decided to go back and follow the numbers. Not only were the Revos the highest average rating across the catagories (with an impressive 9.0 in snow), they were also tied for least expensive after factoring in the Bridgestone rebate.
Bill42 and iForce, you're both right. Too many reviewers have posted high ratings for the tires to be dismissed by a couple who had bad experiences. So, shortly after my wife threatened an intervention between me and the tire web sites, I pulled the trigger and ordered the Revos. They should arrive by mid-October (waiting for the nearest warehouse to get restocked).
I'll report back after we get a few significant snowfalls here. Because at 3 a.m. during a storm, when the roads are unplowed and empty of other drivers, I'll be the only one out seeing all the great sights.
Don't know if anyone else places stock in it, but The Farmer's Almanac calls for a pretty serious winter 'round these parts. I'd like to think I'll be well prepared.

Winchester is a nice, expensive town. Now you just added a set of nice expensive Revos. I am jealous. It's always those who have to have more.

I am north of Winchester and considering getting Revo'd for the winter. Costco seems to have the best deal (about $164 each installed) but I am not sure if they'll screw up my TPMS sensors. I was told you can get the rebate form from Bridgestone store and send it in for $75. Didn't find the form online however.

The only thing is my stock H/T has only seen 10k miles - hard to justify the cost to throw them away.

Unfortunately, Costco isn't participating in the Bridgestone rebate offer as I found out 2 weeks ago. Too bad, cause it would've been a real sweet deal. However, Tirerack.com is offering the rebate which is nice, but factor in the shipping and inconvenience of not having a lifetime balance/rotation/flat repair service readily available, I've decided to get them from Costco. I've been thinking about ordering them soon, but I'm still holding out for the $60 semi-annual rebate for Bridgestone (& Michelin) which I think should occur soon, hopefully before the snow gets here.

What do you mean by "not participating"?

I've read the rebate form I got from a Firestone/Bridgestone Tire center and don't believe Costco is specifically excluded. In fact, the costco tire center employee I spoke with actually said I would get the rebate if I filled out the form acquired from Firestone Tire center - Costco just didn't have the rebate forms.

The Costco tire rep I spoke to knew of the rebate as soon as I mentioned it, but said they aren't offering the rebate this time around. He said that Costco did participated in a previous rebate offer not too long ago. I can't confirm if they're not participating in the rebate period (this time) or if they just aren't providing the rebate forms. If what you say is true, then it'll be a good deal. If not, then oh well.

Don't wait too long for the REVO'S. Price goes up 8% on Nov. 1st.

Probably the first price increase of several to come in the next few months.

Thanx for the heads up! An 8% increase in price would offset any rebate offer (~$52 price hike versus $60 or $75 rebate). I'm gonna hit up my local Costco this coming weekend. I'm finally gonna get my Revos

living up north really could get frustrating with the tires and stuff! since i live in Florida the only time i have to change my tires are when they're worn out! i just feel bad in a way, btw what is the average time for a average used OEM tire before it is worn out? :rocker:
