Best tire Option?

Hi everybody,

Just got 2" OME kit installed and love it, but now its time to replace my tires 265/70 R16.
\My question is what would be best size up from this as i do some off roading?
\Does anybody has any feedback on Nitto Terra tires? Or what tire you would recomend?

I would recommend a good All-Terrain tire. Many people have said a lot of good things about the nitto terragrapplers so I think that might be an option. I personally have the Cooper Discoverer ATR and love them. There a great all around tire and do well off-road. There just not the best in the mud. BFG AT's are nice tires as well. If you only have the 2" Lift I would recommd staying with a 265 but get a 265-75-16. They'll give you a little more lift and just slightly larger. I run the 265-75's with a 2.5" lift and have no complaints. Goodluck.

Try out some 265/75/16's. Or you could go 255/85/16's (33's), but your MPG will suffer, and you will have to do some pounding/trimming.

In 265/75, I'd look at Bridgestone REVO's and BFG KO's. Both about the same performance wise, but the REVO's will be better on-road and KO's will be better off-road.

If you off road more than a few times a year then I'd suggest BFGs or the Nittos since the Revos definelty lean toward more street performance and are a better choice if you put a lot of street miles on your truck and don't really off road too much.

Now between the BFGs and the Nittos I partial to the TerraGrapplers since I've driven many miles on a few sets of BFGs and the Nittos are just a better daily to day tire on the street and in the wet and pretty close if not the same off road as the BFGs and the Nittos are a bit cheaper.

I've got over 40k on my first set of Nittos and next spring I won't be hesitating to get my next set of Nittos.

My mom has a set on her '99 Limited and she really likes them and are a great tire for a daily driver and the occasional off road trip won't hurt them but definetly not in the same class of AT as the BFGs or the Nittos.

I'd think in California, you'd have to worry about wet traction. My REVO's were superb in the rain. If you don't go off-road that much, I'd go with Revo's.

For me, since it's dry here, I'm going with BFG KO's my next go around. Thought about Nitto TG's, but have gotten mixed reviews. I'd rather not gamble on $700+ set of tires. From friends that have had both TG and KO's on their trucks, they always point to KO's (for off-road, which is what my truck will be used for mostly).

RonM, not to put you on the hot seat again, but do you have any facts or technical data to support the Nittos being better than REVOs off-road??

Personally, i don't see that much of a difference in their off-road credentials between the two.

?? Same off-road?? Uhhh...no. For me, i dumped the Nittos because its on-road performance was not any better than BFG...in fact, it had an annoying whine at highway speed that i did NOT hear with REVOs, LTX A/T, nor BFG AT KO. I could have had 4 defective Nitto tires i guess....

I have REVO`s on it right now and yes it is awsome tire for highway and city driving.
My decision is going to be between Nittos and BFG. I think i might go with BFG as i wanna someting more agressive and belive BFG would be better in snow, and i wanna best tire for off road.

Another nice thing if i get BFG ill let my dad get Nittos so that way we can test them both

I found REVO's to be awsome for road and rain, for snow and ice they were little to hard, and for off road not agressive enough.

Another thing is that after 1-2 year after u had them on your rig tire tends to get even harder.
I did get almost 120k KM on it and still got 15 % left but tire is solid hard now lol

I think that this applies to all tires, not just REVOs. In fact, my guess is that the REVOs probably age better than most tires due to their high-tech rubber.

For snow, I'd definitely steer you towards BFG's. My friend with a Tundra had Nitto's and another had BFG's. It was no contest. Nitto's were very slippery in the snow (light snow, maybe 5") compared to the BFG's. Went snow wheeling with my friend with the KO's and they were very confident inspiring. The snow was about 8-10" and we were going up a rocky trail, and the tires were just glued. I was very impressed. Plus, if you're going to be in the rocks, the BFG's have a stouter sidewalls.

That is true Thai. I guess I just found REVOs little to hard as all season A/T tire with not agressive enough grip for snow and offroad !

Other then that it was money well spent on as you said high quality rubber

Snow grip for me has been quite good with my Nittos and I'm sure it's a bit different than compared to a light rearended PU.

I think the Nittos grip pretty well in the white stuff and do a solid job being controlled in a slide. If the road has gotten even a little bit slushy tho' the Nittos will show their superior hydroplane reisistance and still have an edge in my experiences with both brands.

BFGs are still a great tire but on-road they exibit more deficiencies than the Nittos.

I would choose neither. I have not examined REVO's sidewall, but i did examine Nitto's sidewall. I found the Nitto's sidewall to be lacking in strength, as mentioned before. I keep on having the picture of the Land Rover LR3 with Nittos being shredded to pieces! (Unfortunately, that owner took the picture offline.) I can't remember the last time i saw that type of carnage in a tire, much less a tire on a luxury SUV going off-road (aka, this was not due to a rockcrawling competition).

Well, one tire has a stronger sidewall and is designed to be aired down for off-roading. The other tire is not. For me, airing down is a MUST off-road and improves capability of a rig.

BTW, actually, i would like to see a pic of a torn up BFG AT KO. I have never seen one.

Is the REVOs compound hard?? I would expect that the compound to be somewhat soft from my research of REVOs a few years ago. REVOs wear better than most tires NOT because it has hard compound but because its rubber is made of layers of different materials. Thus, as one layer wears out, another layer underneath is actually made of softer compound to maintain on-road grip despite wear. Thus, REVOs maintain adequate grip throughout its life despite wear and tear. So, i do NOT think that the REVOs tread is any harder than Nittos...if anything, it is probably softer.

REVOs do have high void volume at the middle of the tread which does help off-road. The offset grip blocks on the Nittos are OK, but i don't think that you can compare it to the BFG big lug space and true sidewall grip bars (as opposed to "lightning bolts" imprints on the Nittos!). And this is quite obvious considering that Nittos are not really made to air down (like REVOs).

I know...it seems like i am bashing the Nittos...i am just expressing my views against views that say that Nittos are on equal footing with BFG AT KO off-road or that it's significantly better than other AT tires off-road.
