Best tire Option?

I read plenty of bad stories about BFGs on-road performance quite a bit and I'd give the nod to them off road but just slightly since I've really yet to read very much negativity about the Nittos off road (except for your one lone pic but Nittos aren't as popular either at the moment) but this is the reason I'd like to see a controlled test to see which is really a better all around A/T since our opinions aren't able to really be backed up.

I've never had issues with airing down my Nittos so I'm not sure where you get that info but enlighten me.

I seem to be one of the few with a fair amount of experience on both tires and on-road I'd never choose BFGs over another set of Nittos for my truck.

As far as my experience in performance as my Nittos have racked up over 40k on 'em is the street performance hasn't noticeably degraded and off road hasn't changed either so I have no complaints about 'em.

Sidewall is thin...on par with other road-oriented A/Ts (e.g. Michelin LTX A/T-2). Nittos does NOT advertise that the Terra Grappler is designed to be aired down. Hell, just read their website (http://nittotire.com/#index.tire.terragrappler)...most of the fluff is about on-road performance. Now, read what Nittos has to say about their Mud Grappler (http://nittotire.com/#index.tire.mudgrappler)...see how they emphasize sidewall lugs and 3-ply sidewall construction. Nitto TG twin is the Toyo Open Country A/T...and if you go on Toyo site, then you will notice that the Open Country is NOT classified under it's "Off-road" category.

Go read what BFG has to say about the A/T KO (http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/overview/all-terrain-t-a-ko/44.html)...you will immediately see the difference.

Like i said, one tire is made to be a TRUE all-terrain tire and the other is made for mainly on-road performance. One tire is made to be aired down with PROVEN tough-as-nails sidewall. The other tire does not even come close.

Like you, i have had personal experience with both tires and is well documented. I never said that Nittos are worst than BFG AT KO on-road...they are OK (like other on-road-oriented AT tire), but nothing spectacular...so, i stand by my earlier statements between REVOs and Nitto TGs.

For me, since i do off-road over tough rocky terrain, i want a tire that does well on-road (again, i drive very carefully on-road with my G), but is also bullet-proof off-road. I hate having a flat tire while off-roading. I air down 100% of the time...to at least 18 psi (or lower). From my past experiences, Nittos don't even come close to satisifying my needs. Your needs may differ...and i can understand that.

BTW, i think that more than just one lonely me that have seen BFG beat out Nittos off-road...hell, just look at p nut's experience in this thread.

Now, if RonM has the Nitto Mud Grappler, then yeah, the Nitto MG is much better than BFG AT KO off-road. No question about it. I have nothing against Nitto as a tire company. But, the Nitto Terra Grappler is not the Mud Grappler.

Man,you are a good debater and it is hard to compile a solid comeback without spending a portion of my day doing so and with that I guess I just have to go with what has worked for me and after 30 off road trips I've never had an issue and the Nittos on-road performance has made me really happy since the pavement is obviously where my truck spends most of it's time.

I do see a lot more people runnnig Nittos on and off road and I've only seen minimal negative feedback so IMO the Nittos are a viable competitor to the BFGs and the Revos but I still think the Revos are a better choice if you put alot of miles on your truck in a year.

Now if my truck was a weekend warrior that saw a lot more wheelin' I'd consider BFGs again or probably something more aggressive.

p nut's experience was in one situation and kinda vague to pull a solid opinion from that little statement. I've been driving on mine for about 4 years and my tires haven't been the limit to my off road capableness and that includes any with snow I've encountered on the trails.

This is awsome info. I really enjoyed your debate and both of you have solid points.
As I said before I got REVOS on my truck and they are worn out both from on/off road. I had them on my truck for 3 years now (120k km)
It is a really good tire but from my experience it is definettly not agressive enough for big snow and lots of offrading. It is tire designed mainly for on road. I also found it incredible in rain. By the looks of it both Nittos and BFG are good choice of tire with BFG being recomended if u offroad most of the time. Now my dads landcruiser needs tire to, so I decided to get BFG for myself and get Nittos on my dads cruiser.
It is going to be good comparison and ill definetly will post my experience with them.

One more time thanks all for your input and for thai and ronm u deffinetly now your stuff

What more did you want to know? Both of the tires were on a full-size Tundra (one Double Cab (Nitto) and one Access Cab(BFG)). Both tires were 33's. We get our fair share of snowfall here (average of 500 inches, I believe). In 4WD, the Nittos just didn't grip. I felt like my Revo's even gripped better. It was pretty scary going up even a slight incline, as the truck veered sideways with a tap of the gas. The BFG's held a solid line. Nothing in the bed.

Is this your indirect way of saying that i am right, RonM?? :D

From my understanding of p nut's post, i did not see any vagueness to his comparisons. It was pretty straightforward and is indeed consistent with BFG's snowflake designation. (None of the Nittos are certified for severe winter conditions, as designated by the snowflake-on-the-mountain symbol.) And i don't think that he has any beef with either brand since he is shopping for a new tire.

In a way yes but I've also never bagged on the BFG's off road prowess once and they do have the best sidewall lettering in the biz...period.

Great thread guys, I am also looking to replace my stock tires and still cannot decide what would be the best tire for me.

I live in Seattle so I need a tire that can handle lots of rainy and wet conditions but I will also be in snowy conditions almost every weekend.

I do some off-roading but not enough to really buy a tire based on its off road capabilities.

I need a tire that has superior snow and ice capablietes but is also good in wet and rainy conditions.

From what i have read the BFG is great in the snow but not so great in the wet but the Nitto is great on road in the wet but not in the snow.

Which of the two do you think handles both conditions best? Or should I consider a different tire like the Toyo Open Country A/T.

Thanks in advance

If BFGs had a bit better highway manners in the rain and sleet/slushy snow I'd probably opt for them since they are absolutley the best looking A/T tire on the road and their off road capabilities are a tad better than the Nittos (I've got a fair amount of experience in the wet and off road with both) but I've had very good results on and off road with my Nittos but my next set will be a decision between the BFGs or the Nittos since my truck might finally be retired from daily driver duties and wet weather manners won't be a big issue. I also have a friend who has a new set of BFGs collecting dust in his garage so I could get a deal.

The only real negative thing I do see a bit from the BFGs is that they seem to have a problem staying balanced and they are about $40 more a tire from Discount out the door here in Colorado.

tires

I to live near seattle and will be puttin new shoes on my runner. now I've done a fair amount of research into this topic not as much as thai but here you go. first off I got a set of cooper discoverer H/T they blow period anytime it rains my trac control is on alot more than I care for and I've had a balance or out of true problem three different tire places can't figure it out and no other issues outside of the tires like bearsing etc etc. I looked into BFG AT a trusted brand since I can remember then I read an article in four wheeler mag a heads up shoot out between BFG, TOYO, and KUMOHO there results state that the BFG did better in the more extreme offroad conditions but that the on road defensive driving tests the bfg was at the bottom of the list and they cost alot more than the competitors. ok now toyo open country a/t seems to be an all around good tire from the reveiws, mags and general public I work construction so I come across alot of trucks and guys that commute and offroad and I've heard great things about both. my brother runs a set of toyo a/t on his dodge 1500 he loves them. I join this forum and it seems that the majority is running nitto's I check with some of the members most love them. I check reveiws on the nitto's on discount tires site unless you have a 3/4 ton truck and haulin a bunch of weight they seem great for the price. as far as the other brands I haven't looked into them so sorry can't help there. sorry if it seems I'm hi jacking thought it might help. I myself hmmm leaning toward the nitto's.

I too am looking at replacing the tires on my T4R. When I bought it, it had BFG TA/KOs on them. My Z71 had Hankook Dyna Pro ATM RF10s which I liked but did not get to run off road much. Do any of you have an opinion on those?

Hi there,

I unfortunatelly never had a chance to try those out or had any of my friends using them. Its been just over 3 years since original post and I can tell you the experience that I had with both Nittos on my 4Runner and BFG KO on my dads Landcruiser. We put them on our trucks at the same time. Nitto have been a awsome for regular snow, some ice, rain and some offroading. Theey are a better tire then BFG for show and ice as they are much softer rubber ( my dad still has more then 60% tread left), and my Nittos are pretty much done after 75k km. BFG is much tougher tire, but I never had a flat on my Nittos. I took them to all kind of condition and all kind of speeds including 20 hour straight highway at speeds over 120 km/h, so I would not worry about them disinegrating like Thai mention at one of his posts from before. I would get them again in a heart beat.

Hope this helps
