Best Tires for Snow

I have been trying to decide between getting General Grabber AT2s and getting Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. Both have the snowflake symbol. The Duratracs definitely look better but the AT2s are cheaper and are still very highly rated tires.

I still haven't made a firm decision, but I want to ask, does anybody here have any experience studding tires, specifically studding these two tires?

These tires both come with holes intended for studs to be installed. Is it possible/safe to do this yourself and them take them out when winter is over? Or do you have to get it studded when you buy them and then keep the studs forever?

There really is no competition when it comes to Nokian Hakkapeliittas. They are hands down the best of the best winter tires in the world.
Michelin and Bridgestone is excellent too,but Nokian is just a legue of their own.

My wife is running Nokian snows on her C300 4Matic and it's working out really well, this is season two with those tires. I must confess I'd never heard of the brand and the guy at the tire store sort of had to talk me into the nokian's and out of Blizzak's it helped that he Nokians were cheaper. We are very happy with them. (obviously not a truck/suv tire):thumb3:

I might catch some flack from this but I will never buy BFG A/Ts again horrible in the snow, pick up every rock on the road and are very loud compared to the Toyo open country a/t. I've had both from new on my tacomas in the past and have bought the open country a/ts ever since. Yokahama geolanders don't last long but still have better grip then the BFG's. You will never beat the performance of a dedicated winter tire. I've had nokian and blizzaks on my cars both very good buys. I am in Wisconsin so where no strangers to snow. Good luck!

Falken AT3w. This is theyre first season of snow and so far so good... havent had to use 4wd.

What kind of snow are you thinking? Deep snow is quite a bit different from wanting traction on icy roads. In deep snow - the best tire I've ever seen is the old Dick Cepek fun country 44's.

For snowy roads - snow tires obviously. Among ones that are available in most larger sizes (but not for sale in southern USA areas) are the Cooper ATW. On our plow trucks we run Cooper M+S or Firestone Winterforce. Both work well on icy roads. Neither are good for heavy offroad in deep snow.

Glad you like it.those tires are made in Russia and are from Finland.
Those Europeans don't play around when designing the Nokians.

I ran STT pros (cooper) for two winters, one winter siped and one not siped. They impressed me, I think I read something about their compound having more silica in them. They responded well to conservative driving, and were an awesome tire. I would recommend them, and would buy them again if they came in a 33x10.5 flavor.

been running snows on my subarus and now on my 04 t4r v8 sport 4wd. i prefer Bridgestone Blizzak, I've put 50k on my set on my forester, never took them off since new, but honestly they still have at least 10-15k of tread left. Got the DM-V2 on the 4runner, simply amazing in the snow, slop and ice, i will be putting an all season on it to keep the new Blizzys nice for winter...
Bridgestone all the way for me, you cant go wrong with them if you need a superior snow tire, spendy, but awesome tires.

Another vote from snowy Vermont for almost any Nokian winter tire. The Firestone Winterforce are pretty goof too - had them on my F350 before I switched to Nokian Rotiiva AT Plus tires. The Rotiivas also come in sizes for our 4Runners. Winter rated and wear like cast iron, a rare combination. The truck handles great in the snow with the Rotiivas and they are notoriously light in the rear end.

Completely agree. Blizzaks are the best snow tires I’ve ever used. I will run my Revo 3’s from late spring thru early fall and then switch back back over to Blizzaks for the winter.

Wrangler DuraTracs are big, beefy tires that handle snow like no other tire I've ever had. They have the snowflake on the side and are rated 10/10 for snow performance, which I can attest to.

I loved the duratracs on my FJ. This poster's experience mirrors mine, the duratracs just blazed through snow, regardless of type or depth.

My only concern on them was the sidewall, since Virginia tends to be rocky, but they never let me down.
