What do you use for Snow in your area? I live in central NY and often get a lot of Snow. I'll probably end up with two sets either way for more options! Thanks.

M/T tires, right now Ive got the goodyears MTR but have used the TreadWright MT Claws, those are really great tires

Second, how is the E rating? My KO2's irritate me because the ride is so rough with the E rating.

I was worried about 3 things when I purchased these tires:

1) They were mud tires
2) They were 33”
3) They were E-rated

All 3 concerns became non-issues after my first drive with these MTZs.

Hey all, I have a stock 2001 4Runner SR5 4x4 3.4L with the TRD package. There is no lift and it's a daily driver. I am looking for recommendations for a good all terrain tire that's not too expensive but it's really important that they work well in wet/snow conditions. I live in Northern Minnesota and we have wet/snow conditions more often than not. The current tires I have now suck. I never take my 4Runner off-road. I have a well built Jeep CJ-7 for that.

Just looking for recommendations for a good all terrain tire that has good on road, highway, and wet/snow handling.

If you want THE BEST and for use in the snow, I can highly recommend MICHELIN. I have run their LTX's and the AT2's and while living in snowy upstate New York, the AT2's were awesome in the snow/slush/ice. Costco has some -$70 off deals (for a set of 4 Michelin's). Keep track of the COSTCO offers and pick up up a set. They last forever, ride great, do well in snow and they are dependable.

IMHO, an "all terrain" tire is not, going to be "good" in snow..
we have done a few little tests here in Colorado, a few times, and all terrain tires just suc in the snow.

Try the Goodyear Authority in some snow and it might change your mind.

Best tire I have ran and I have been trying different tires since 2000. I like the the authorities enough to have ran them on four different vehicles so far.

You web wheelers are so high. This guy doesn't need aggressive mud or all terrains. I have Cooper AT3s and drive similarly to him. They are noisy and suck in the rain compared to a street tire. Cheap tires like Falkens or "Goodyears for walmart" are garbage. You won't notice it right away.

Michelin LTX M/S is the best you can get. Also consider: General Grabber HTS. Toyo Open Country A/T or H/T. Pirelli Scorpion ATR is a great tire.

Fantastic tires !!!

Taken it through mud , really loose shale and gravel , snow and ice. Handled it all flawlessly.

Tiny hum at highway speeds but with a little music at volume , can’t even hear them.

I have 20k miles on Michelin Defender LTX and they're hands down the best tires I've purchased on any vehicle.

Will toss in my two cents - I DD a 2001 4Runner between 25k and 35k miles a year for work and use it for off roading and camping off road (some call it expo camping but I am too cheap to use that $$$ word).

I have ran all these tires on this rig:

BFG KO2 - looked good, handled fine, threw every rock they could. I ended up taking them off after 10k miles for fear of my paint. I spent a lot of time on dirt/gravel roads in that time.

Hankook MTs - great tires of off road performance, decent road manners but they got loud on pavement, as they aged they got harder to balance. Still a favorite tire for aggressive tires at the price point.

Hankook ATMs -great compromise tire for good pavement driving and solid off road use. I used these tires on a few off road trips that were iffy and they handled fine once aired down a little. They had good mileage life with close to 45k miles on them. I bought two sets of these tires; tough to beat at the price point.

Cooper ATPs - current set of tires that I have been on for roughly 5k miles now. I have used them for a few off road trips with impressive results, they have impressive pavement manners (my wife falls asleep anytime I drive more than 10 mins and these tires do not interrupt her sleep). This has been a heavy rain year for Texas and I am very happy with these tires performance in these rains. At this point I do plan to buy these tires again.


Just my two cents after a decent bit of road testing. My wife will probably need tires on her Tacoma later this year and I plan to go with Cooper ATPs at that time.

I just put Laufenn x-fit A/T tires on my 96, love em so far, smooth as glass , tried Presa tires -junk junk junk, laufenns are inexpensive and made by hankook, highly recommend

I'm running the Falken wild peak AT3W and they are amazing in the snow. They are also very quiet on the road and great off road. Best part is they are cheap, I paid 107/tire from simple tire when they had a sale going.

Mine are 265/75/16

I had KO's and I hated them. Rough ride, noisy and sucked in the snow. They did do very well off road though.

The wife has a 99 4runner and we have been using Firestone Destination A/T tires on it for years and have had very good luck with them. We Live in NW Pennsylvania so we see alot of different weather.

What people consider the "best" is definitely going to vary depending on use. If I lived in an area like Minnesota that had winters with solid snow, I'd run a winter set of tires.
