best way to mount snowboards without snowboard rack?

What's the best way to mount a snowboard or two on our factory mounted roof rails? tie them down? I know the best way is to get a snowboard rack but I'm working on a serious budget!

If you are driving far, don't try to just tie them down. If you are traveling fairly short distances, throw em up there just tie them down good.

Lay it on top of the cross rails and put a rubber bungee around each binding attaching the hooks on the cross rail. Been doing it for years.

if its just one or two, i put it in the back and slide the boards between the rear seat slot. they dont wiggle, and the bindings hold them in place in the event of an accident, etc.

I just throw them in the back. If your truck is completely stuffed, you could bungee them down like the dickens and use rope as a backup.
