Better SAFE Than Sorry..........

I have a 2010 4runner TE. Does anyone have any slick pistol safes for their handguns? :ak472:

for what purpose?

IMO, having the pistol in a safe in your truck is almost like not having it at all. Is the bad guy (BG) going to wait for you while you reach into your safe to get the pistol to ward him off? Probably not unless he's got the IQ of a rock or a banana  Of course, the safe is necessary if you don't have a CCW or if you're traveling through a Shall-Not-Issue state.

Not trying to insult you, just trying to understand the logic. Better to have it close by and not need it, than to not have it at all is what I live by. Not a gun nut, just aware that crazy $h!t happens in the best of places (church) and at the most unsuspecting of times (broad daylight).

To answer your question, no have not heard/seen of any pistol safes, but I do recall seeing in a Springfield XD forum a picture of someone who took a Kydex holster and screwed it to plastic siding of the center console near where the driver's knee would be. I think that was just for when he was in the car and didn't want the pistol in his IWB holster, but still wanted easy access. I guess he removed it from that console holster when he left the vehicle.

Hope this helps somewhat! :)

x2. I do however have a safe in my minivan...because on a car trip, i will need the safe in my hotel room (if none avail) to prevent my kids from touching it. And my safe in the minivan is just a simple box with quick access buttons.

I agree that having a gun in the safe while you are in the car is a bit pointless. However, having a gun safe in your car can be very beneficial as well, especially if you need to leave your vehicle for any reason with the gun in it. All it takes is a second for someone to break into your car, but it's better for them to make off with the stereo or insignificant personal belongings rather than your gun. If a gun safe is mounted securely and operating properly, most petty thieves won't have the time or interest to break into it. You definitely don't want your gun being stolen! So with that said, I think a gun safe in a car can be a very good idea.

Alaskaman has a gun safe in his 4th gen 4Runner. You can try to do a search on the forum or PM him for more specifics. If memory serves, he did a write-up on the install.

Great point! And exactly why I will be following this thread to see what others suggest about a particular safe. At the moment, I am forced to leave my pistol in my vehicle when I go out to eat at a place that serves alcohol, even though I would never have an occasional beer while carrying - absolutely pointless to drink even a drop and carry.

Luckily that restaurant ban is being repealed as soon as the Governor signs the bill. :bluejump::party:

Bump

Sorry to bump an old thread, but as a new 5th Gen owner, I'm also looking for anyone who's found a proven solution to this.

Despite the earlier debate in this thread, having a safe at times is a good option and the GunVault safe I've had in my SUV's for years will not fit in the new truck.

Has anyone installed a safe in their 5th Gen? If so, what type, and where did you put it?

Thanks in advance.

Foam cut out ,false bottom, center console, done deal.

I have them in all my vehicles that have a center console.

My Tundra Crew Max has a holster screwed into the floating divider:gun5:

Cocked, locked and ready to rock :bigok:

And this is in the Socialist Republik of Na_zi Pelosi Kalifornia. Where you can't even fart without attracting liberal attention.

Excuse my ignorance, but is it legal to carry a handgun in the car in most US states? In Canada, we're lucky if we can use a rifle on the farm, and owning an handgun would be like trying to sneak out the door with baby jesus.

I had a chance to play with the Console Vault mentioned above and it is definitely a quality product. Like others, I'll be placing an order as soon as they make one exactly for our trucks.

In the mean time, I'm considering one of those single pistol safes that is rectangular and flat. Not much bigger than a large size auto. I'm wondering if it can be mounted to the floor under the 2nd seat, much like where Snooperstyle stores his tow gear: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/attachments/5th-gen-t4rs/34962d1288725382-space-under-rear-deck-img_2276.jpg

The first issue would be finding one that is as flat as possible and then the 2nd would be finding out if we could bolt it down to the body of the truck at this location without damaging whatever is under this spot.

Yep - in most states we can. It varies from state to state and between individuals (those who have a carry permit, not a felon, etc).

But unless you've got a badge that says you're a cop, no permit is good in every single place, 100% of the time. Hence the option to lock the gun in a safe now and then.

Currently, I use one of the "cheap" rectangular boxes, with a key lock, and a cable connector that goes around my seat mount. It is not ideal, but it is necessary with MI carry laws, when I walk my kids into their schools. I like the fact that it is removable when unlocked, because I can then move it to the rear compartment of the vehicle, in the event that i have had anything to drink at all, and my wife is driving. Technically, if its in the passenger area, locked or not, loaded or not, it is considered concealed. The cable is long enough to reach to the front seat for access, but I can also tuck the safe in the rear pocket behind the driver's seat.

There are lots of reasons to keep a gun safe in the vehicle. I think anyone that carries, is being responsible by utilizing a safe when necessary. The responsibility goes far beyond instant access.

Concealed carry laws vary from state to state. I believe there is only one state (IL) that does not have some provision for concealed carry by private individuals.

A number of states have discretionary licensing, where concealed carry permits are issued at the discretion of some authority. That authority might be at the state level (e.g., the Attorney General in RI), at the county level (e.g., a county judge in NY), or at the local level (e.g., chief of police in MA). In some discretionary states like MD, it is almost impossible to get a concealed carry permit. In other states like MA, it varies from almost impossible to easy, depending upon where you live in the state.

A large number of states have so-called shall-issue concealed carry permits. In those states, the authority MUST issue the permit provided the applicant meets the statutory requirements -- no discretion is allowed. The reason for the spread of this type of law is the almost universal abuse of discretionary licensing wherever it has been enacted. States with shall issue permitting include FL, TX, IN, ME, NH, etc.

A few states don't require a license to carry concealed - VT, AK, and I think AZ just went this route.

That said, even if you have a license to carry concealed, many states have laws that place certain areas off limits. In MA, schools are off limits. In some states, any restaurant that serves alcohol is off limits, even if you aren't drinking or sitting in the bar area. And federal property is generally off limits as well, though National Parks are no longer off limits (but the buildings on National Parks are off limits).

And while a drivers license issued by any state is valid in any other state in the Union, a concealed carry permit may or my not be honored by another state. It's a crazy quilt of concealed carry laws here in the States.

Oh, and to add to the confusion, in some states it is legal to have a loaded handgun in your car even if you don't have a concealed carry permit. In other states, like NH, you must have a concealed carry permit to have a loaded gun in your car.

Great reply, thank you. Another reason to love VT! You'd think there would be some federal standard, recognized by all states. In Canada, no such handgun carry permits exist (that I know of, unless you're police) and even owning a rifle (that can't go in the car) requires an extensive Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC), which of course has become a massive and multi-billion bungle by the federal government. Anyway, thanks for great explanation, I've always wondered.

dekeman, you are welcome.

There are some states where you need a permit before you can buy a gun (e.g., MA). There are other states where you need a permit before you can buy a handgun, but not before you can buy a long gun (NY, if I understand correctly). But in most of the US, you do not need a permit before you can buy a gun -- you will have an "instant" background check done at the time of sale. And then there are states like MA and CA which have salami-slicing laws that ban this gun or that gun, grandfather this but not that, etc. I've got a book on MA gun laws that is over 500 pages long. Ugh.

VT-style regulation has a lot to be said for it, but one downside. Some states will recognize other states concealed carry permits, or issue non-resident permits to out-of-state residents who have permits from their home states. But VT doesn't have a home state permit, so that can cause problems. AK and AZ still issue home state permits for just that reason, even though local residents don't need one to carry.

I've read stories about Canada's firearms registry and the controversy surrounding it. I'll refrain from opining on the wisdom of registration.

Concerning federal standards, much of that dates back to revolutionary times. The colonies really were separate, and considered themselves almost independent states. So there is a lot of legal tension between states rights and federal rights. Many issues that are covered by "federal" law in other countries are covered by state law in the US, and since we've got 50 states, the law varies considerably. There are a number of court cases working their way through our legal system that may have a large impact on our gun laws. The next 2-10 years could be interesting.
