Better SAFE Than Sorry..........

I finally got around to doing the false bottom as had been mentioned in this old thread. With a few new owners experiencing break-ins lately, it seems like an appropriate time to bring this thread back to life to see what new ideas pop up.

Standard console:

Plus false bottom made from stiff cardboard and covered with a thin piece of textured plastic that looks like it belongs in the bottom of a console:

Cut to fit perfectly:

Simple, free, and effective. I now have an area big enough to stash a few valuables as needed and it looks natural enough that most thieves aren't going to notice the false bottom. Notice in picture #1 I've just cut out a square hole in the inside of the console which allows a mid-size automatic to fit under the false bottom. (Provided that such items are legal in your area!) :AK47:

Now I just need to get another one of those removable dividers that don't happen to have a part #!!

Feedback and better suggestions welcome.

my shoulder holster and/or belt holster work for me :)

Agreed. But as was debated earlier, if you're playing within the laws, every state I've been stationed in has required that I leave it in the truck when entering certain places (churches, bars, places displaying a specific sign, etc). Unless you're carrying a badge, all of us are likely to run into this challenge. The idea is just to give myself options.

Excuse my ignorance, but is it legal to carry a handgun in the car in most US states? In Canada, we're lucky if we can use a rifle on the farm, and owning an handgun would be like trying to sneak out the door with baby jesus.

Thats not entirely true. In Canada you can easily buy most handguns that have barrels alittle over 4 inches long. Hanguns are restricted in their use and mostly limited to ranges. Permits to carry them called ATC3 are still issued but are extremely hard to get.

We can buy ARs up here as well and even with ITAR regs theres lots to chose from. We can even buy stuff that you cant get in the US such as Tavors and Swiss Arms rifles (Sig 550x series or PE90s).

Things arent perfect but they are getting better. Still not as good as the US though.

Here is my Swiss Carbine...

I was actually out at the gun store today and bought a nice .270 Win for deer season. Its not the land of the free up here, but we are better than some US states like CA, NJ and NY.

I just removed the ConsoleVault from my 06 Tundra. No way to get it into the 4Runner console. I'll probably put it in the cargo area somewhere.

But don't rule out ConsoleVault not making one just because it isn't on their site. When I got mine, they only had them listed for the "new" style 07-and-up Tundras, but they DID actually make them for the older Tubdras, as well (same one as they sell for the Sequoia, actually). This is what iwas told by the person who answered the phone and who actually started the company - I think his name was Tom.

Anyway, who knows: maybe they can fabricate one for the 4Runner.

It is most definitely a quality piece of gear and well worth having, especially if you have any need to store a weapon or other valuables in a vehicle for any length of time.

I hope they do - Might be worth giving them another call to see if they've gotten any more recent calls. I know the 4th Gen was high on their list when I called them a few months ago - maybe the 5th Gen is in the running.

Good point, Scuba. Maybe I'll do that before drilling any new holes in my truck - lol!

I just talked to someone at Console Vault and they said the safe for the 5th Gens is about 6 weeks out from being ready. I must admit that this individual didn't sound like as much of an expert and the guy I'd spoken to months ago, so I'd be curious to check back in another month to firm up that timeline.

She also said that they have done group buys for other forums, so it might be something for us to consider if the interest is there a couple months.

saw this idea in Cabelas flyer

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Home/Misc-Shooting/Concealed-Carry-Holsters|/pc/105625080/c/106032780/sc/106833780/Soft-Armor-Seat-Belt-Holster-Strap/1168633.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fhome-misc-shooting-concealed-carry-holsters%2F_%2FN-1104256%2FNo-96%3FWTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNP

I mean it is not anything special. Just put a belt around your seat and use a good holster to hold your pistol. I'd feel pretty safe with a serpa holster, but no use to have it with you unless you can get to it quickly.

I'd be in for a group buy and I haven't bought my T4R yet.

I agree and did not mean to make fun of it . I do have a badge and can carry anywhere , although even on my person it's always concealed . I'll just leave it at that. I understand what you want to do and it will be interesting to see results .

No worries! I also had the perks of a badge in a former life - but until I leave the military, I'll be playing under the CCW set of rules.

I'll keep my fingers crossed on this group buy for the console vault in a couple months.

No one else mentioned it, and everyone was thinking it, LMT 556, that is a nice rifle.

Toyota should cross market with Sig and do a Sig Trail Edition!

I travel a lot, and I carry. I'd want a vehicle gun safe so that when I go to the bar, etc. I can lock my pistol in a secure place.
