better-than-OEM oil filter?

first post! just acquired a very nice 2000 SR5 5-speed-manual with 191,000miles.

going through and changing fluids. is there a better and/or higher capacity oil filter for these vehicles that is widely and successfully used?

After watching this youtube video, I'll use either the NAPA gold filter or the OEM filter. Not really sure what would be the best, kinda depends on how much you want to spend on filters. As long as you change your oil in time you should be fine. I know the toyota dealers in my area occasionally sell filters at 50% off so I'll get 5 when they have that deal going on.

I get the yota bigger filter, dzz3. adds maybe a pint of oil so no benefit there, but more filter surface area ( benefit there) and usually same price

I will never attack anyone who's asking these questions although there are people on other forums who certainly would. People will go to war about these things-- politics, religion, oil & filters!

I have firsthand experience with the OEM YZZD1 and YZZD3 filters. They're great, but I prefer and run the D3's. They are slightly taller than the D1's but nothing crazy. I've used the Napa Gold filters once but have heard that there's glass or fiberglass inside the media, not sure if I want that being circulated throughout my oil and engine. No real evidence to back the aforementioned claim though.

Fram (hot take) makes a well regarded synthetic filter called the Fram ultra synthetic. But if you're looking for the biggest filter you can possibly throw onto your truck, the Fram PH/XG3600 is what you're looking for. It is massive. I've used it once (the PH3600, otherwise known as the OCOD - orange can of death or delight, depending on your preference) and had fine results. But it's definitely a tight fit, so be aware. It will definitely fit, but you're gonna have to take time putting it on and removing it during oil changes.

In the end, I just get the YZZD3's from my local Walmart and run them without any issues. Toyota-Denso filters are well made and I sleep well at night running them.

If you use a filter that big you better prefill it or the first 10 seconds of operation will be without oil. Though you should do that anyways.

I used both versions of the Toyota filter, both worked. I wasn’t impressed by the performance of it in comparison but it probably doesn’t matter.

quick and to-the-point responses; I appreciate it! Based on your responses think I will buy a few YZZD3 and Purolator PureOne filters and see what I prefer. As mentioned, peace of mind ...

I'm going to change the oil soon and will cycle through some HDL cleaner for a short interval, then probably alternate HDL oil and another quality synthetic. have heard raves about HDL oil.

Was disappointed by the Wix review: I've been using those in my '91 Miata. may have to reconsider.

I use Purolator for the same reasons some like the larger filters in other brands - more filter area. Interestingly enough - the same filter (20195) also fits Prius 2nd gen (maybe more) and Camry 5-6 gen (maybe more).

Larger like YZZD3 = PL20195
OEM Size = PL14477

Stay away from the frame synthetic. The good ones were the originals, as in the first gen of them. The new ones are junk.

Always shake your new oil filter, why? Well to make sure the media didn't break off or was miss assembled.

I don't unfortunately. It was a earls billet oil filter adapter on the block, some -10 an fittings and hoses and a filter mount. I can get pics later, but everything is covered.

Absolutely! I got more oil capacity and a bigger, better filter. Next oil change I'm installing a quick drain valve, so I'll never have to take off the skid plate to do an oil change again!

I just asked the Toyota techs at the local dealer.. They had classes on this subject. The classes had the research and developed teams in Toyota explain this. Its more important to change the oil filters and oil in timely intervals then use oversize ones. The standard oil OEM filters are designed for the engines. He said all the folks are doing are using more oil and stressing the oil pumps more due to higher volume of oil. Its one of the reasons why Toyota sales the oil filters really reasonable. I will not use Frams and I used to use wix but I just went back to Toyota OEM ones over the years. They are all I will use now with Full synthetic oil.

These older rigs can leak full synthetic oil if the oil seals are warn. So until you can change the oil seals you can bump the oil viscosity to 10w -30 or use a blended oil which is synthetic and standard oil. The slightly thicker oil likes to stay on warn seals..

Agree that timely oil changes are important. I'm not understanding how more oil capacity is putting any additional stress on the oil pump? I seriously have a hard time believing that one.

I wanted to jump in and just give anecdotal here:

I have owned a bunch of older higher mileage vehicles. All of them 150K+ of various makes and models. I nearly certain most of these prior owners were not using the best of the best synthetic oils.

None of my vehicles developed anything different, or any leaks, no leaks worsened if they were present already when I changed my oils to higher grade synthetics.

For OP - I am also an OEM and napa gold user, I think most things on the net show these along with a wix branded to have really nice internal structure. I also(omg how could you!?) fill my oil filter a bit prior to use and fill the oil to the dipstick line as normal. I am with Robb235, its a closed system, its not like the pump has load stacked on it like a person doing pushups with a ruck on.

Been using YZZD3's quite a while 20 yrs. or so, what I really like about them with 5VZ
6 qts. puts oil level right on the full dot of dip stick every time. Tracking oil loss if any from burn or leaks simple task.

Of 6 models they currently offer which one of these valves do you have? I'm assuming the F133N?

(I have been mentally digesting having one of these on a vehicle for a decade)

Well, again this is just what I was told. I can understand the oil capacity shouldn't matter. Then again over filling engines can cause major issues granted that is when the oil has no place extra to go.

Their point basically, was the standard oil filter size was all that was needed and the extra big filters with the extra oil has no added benefit. I am not here to argue that point.. Just what was relayed.
