A lot of things can happen to a tire. For example, your BFG tires may have been outdated when you bought it. I take it that your FJ was a weekend vehicle. When i had my G-wagen, i had Firestone Destination M/T. After 10k miles or so, it was undriveable. 3 out of 4 tires went "out of round." My G was used for weekend off-road and generally driven once a week. Thanks to JB, i found out later that i was not using enough PSI (higher than usual for LT tires). So, it could be that it sat for days without rolling...it could be psi related...it could be that my Firestones suck. Later on, i had BFG AT Ko on my G...no issues with it. I don't know the real reasons why 3/4 Firestones went bad, but (like most things) it is hard to point finger at one reason without a detailed autopsy of the tire by an expert.

I respect BFG AT KO as an all-terrain tire. As noted above, for off-roading, i would NOT use it...M/Ts are inherently better. But, as an all-terrain tire, it is a very good tire.
Fading away? I don't know about that...i see plenty on the trails here in Texas....

I have not heard of any ripping issues with BFG AT KO until this very thread!
Never...and i have been big into tires for a long time too!I watched a few videos of you wheeling in your G. For that type of wheeling the BFG AT is just fine.
It all depends. I only do extremely mild wheeling in my 4Runner, if even that. I have a different vehicle I use for actual off roading. On my 4Runner a street tire is adequate, no need for even an AT tire. On my off-road vehicle no BFG product is not adequate.
When I started wheeling th MTR just came out, I read a few review talked a few people and decided to get a set. At that point BFG was very popular. I wheeled with allot of Discoveries and Jeeps with BFG MTs. They would rip all the time. When I moved to CA there was such a problem with BFG ripping on rocks it came to the point of don't try this with your BFGs unless you have a couple spares.
I don’t wheel as hard as I used to, I am married, have two children and 4 houses to pay for. Before that I wheeled very hard and I can tell you from experience the BFGs didn’t hold up.
I do have a BFG MT as a spare. I use it as a spare because it is light and would be easy to deal with in an awkward situation. The reason they are so light is because they have a thin side wall.

Now, i do agree that BFG sidewall may not be as stout as MT/R...but MT/R has their own issues (poor balance, poor traction). And your prior tires are redneck-type MTs (Truxus, etc.). So, yeah compared to those hardcore MTs, i can see why you say that the BFG sidewalls are not as good.
But, compared to other ALL-TERRAINS, i would bet that BFG AT KO sidewall is plenty strong...and likely more stout than most well-known brands.

No offense...but I thought the same thing. Sorry Koz but I would take a BFG AT vs a RevoII off road all day long.
I am not brand specific either but I know the BFG has kept me out of trouble, that is why it is hard for me to switch.
I would give the Duratracs a shot but they don't make a size that will fit the 18" limited wheels, that leads me back to the BFG A/T.
Also were the flawed BFG's covered under warranty and replaced?
It was my daily driver and weekend wheeler.

TrXus MTs are redneck? Didn’t know those types of terms were associated with tires. When MTRs changed to the Kevlar side wall their issues with balance at first. That seems to have been corrected. The original MTRs were unstoppable on dry rock. They didn't do as well on the set slippery stuff so that is why I got rid of them. They did about as good as BFG MT is gravel mud but not as good in the clay mud. I have a winch and always found it easier to winch out of the mud than have to change a tire. When I lived in CA I was stationed at Fort Irwin, it is in the desert so rocks being wet didn't happen much and never say much mud. But the destruction of BFG and also pro comp was common.
The new MTRs seem to be a great improvement over the old ones. The title of this is BFG AT review, I have expressed my opion, your may be different. If the BFG ATs work for you that is fine. They don't fit any of my needs or wants.

Good point to CXS...if their sidewall had cracks, then it should be covered by warranty!

Off road, yes the BFG is better, but on pavement there is no comparison. Also the REVO II E rated tire is pretty good off road.
I'm glad the snowflake didn't come up! lol

I've had a set of E rated LTs and I never felt they were a problem as far as A/T type tires. Being an excellent on road tire I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did off road (even in sand). There is a difference between the passenger and light truck tire (construction and tread pattern). The LT REVO was probably the best tire I’ve used for towing (very strong and tight side wall). Stronger then the GY SA (the SA was better in the snow). It also had the perfect balance of smooth ride and traction. Every tire has its pros and cons (purpose). My next tire will be the LTX M/S 2. My off roading will be limited to easy trails.

Is that why they released the first off road rock crawling specific tire the BFG Krawler?
Or maybe that's why Baja 1000 is typically won by someone rolling BFG Bajas TAs?
Or why they often sponsor Top Truck Challenge and so many other off road events?
Or the several redesigns of the BFG M-T in recent years? How many times has super swamper done a tread overhaul?

I love mine I originally got them for my 92 2wd. & let me say that with low pressure that 2wd would go anywhere. Now i have them on my 94 4wd.
They are made with a 3 ply sidewall & are strong as an ox.I have put them through all offroad conditions except snow & they are well worth the Cost.:banana:

Koz, "even in sand"?? Dude, any street tire is great in sand! In fact, tires with aggressive lugs are not good in sand because they have a tendency to dig in sand. So, you saying how well it does off-road, "even" in sand means absolutely nothing. My Prius tires would do wonderful in sand, as long as i keep momentum and air down (which are the basic principles of sand driving). So, your highway bias "AT" tire should do well in sand, but that does not give it much off-road credibility. Your REVO2 competitors include: Michelin LTX m/s, Firestone Destination AT, and other mild "AT" tires. Basically, they are highway only tires with slightly aggressive tread pattern.
And yeah, those pics of you running thru mud puddles can be done in my old CRV.
x2. BFG ain't fading...they are one of the biggest names off-road...and their sales prove that.
That is just a weird picture...almost seems like someone slashed it! Do you have enemies?!
Of course I do! Seriously that is representative of the three splits I had and none were vandalism. Credit goes to the warranty and I can't follow-up on their performance because I sold the truck.
