BFG T/A Alternates - I might be getting 70's..

Well in a turn of events the dealer, whom I'm just purchasing my new ride from, cannot get the 265/65R17"s in the BFG T/A KO :redbrick:, according to them "months of backorders" - I'm thinking they don't want to pay the price for them.

Anyway, I asked them to look for 265/70R17's BUT if they give me the same BS what are good alternates??

Will I be 4 wheelin, not a lot (yet) but I'm more than interested and we do back roads, lots of snow etc so snowflake is a definite, I was not much for the Michelin M/S, slippery when cold....

I have no lift at the moment and that may take till the new year to get so if you know they might rub please say so, I'll have the dealer leave them unmounted and do them when I'm ready, or get some FJ rims and Powder coat black :guitar3: oh yeah.......

The difference in size should not make a difference in so far as running, although you did pick the one tire that might. the AT KO is the most square tire you could buy. Here's a link for a great site that shows the comparison for different tire sizes.

You'll notice the difference in the two sizes you've mentioned is exactly 1/2" difference in radius. In other words you're 1/2" closer to rubbing something than stock. Then you've got to keep in mind the KO has that very square corner instead of being somewhat rounded like most competing tires. If you're going to have any rubbing that's boing to be why IMO.

Maybe you should look into some alternatives like the Firestone AT, which a lot of people rave about and is very good on road. Or if you want a more serious off road tire then go with Goodyear Duratrac's which some people would say is more of a hybrid between an AT and at MT. Something in the middle would be the Hankook ATM RF10. The Firestone is made in a 265 / 65 / 17. The Duratrac and Hankook come only in 265 / 70 / 17, but unlike the KO both have more rounded edges and won't be so near to rubbing.

P. S. I've driven the KO a lot, and it's a great tire all around. However that particular tire weakness is it's not so great in rain and the lugs fill up very quickly in mud. It's more of a dry climate desert / mountain kind of tire IMO. I'm thinking if your in Canada, that's not going to be your climate more than likely. The Firestone is a little more of a road tire, but the Duratrac is very, very good in mud for an AT. Both do well in wet weather.

Have a look at the snowflake embossed Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour if you 'have to have' the snowflake. This might be another good snowflake embossed option: Kumho Road Venture SAT KL61

:iagree: Went to see the tire in person thinking I'd buy it, then got suspicous when I saw the tread pattern was dead wriger for the KO. Turns out the reviews aren't too great, which makes sense as some people were buying it as a cheaper version of the BFG.

In an odd twist of good fortune the dealer called today and we struck a deal where they will give me full credit toward the tires in the form of a price reduction :wow: yeah unheard of, but now I can take some time to really go an "kick the tires" pun intended.

I was liking the looks of the GYWSA and the Revo 2's, my thoughts on the KO's were the same re squareness and rubbing, I'm not sure how fast I'm able to get a small lift.

The snow flake is not a "have to" but snow performance is important without going to a full winter tire, I would prefer not to do season swaps.

I just got the Hankook RF10s about 2k miles ago. So far I like them. I am a BFG guy when it comes to tires. I run FJ springs with adjustable bilstein 5100s set at 1.75" with the stock rims. I didn't want any rubbing so I stayed away from the BFGs this time. We go about 2" of snow on top of some ice last week so I tried out the 'kooks. Traction was pretty good. Haven't had them in the deep stuff yet. They balance better than the Yoko ATS I had on before the 'kooks. Of course they are better than the stock dunlops. I run the 265/70/17 size with no rubbing at all.
