BFG vs GYDT vs NTG MPG

06 4Runner. Want to install the 5100s next week with 1.5 spacer in rear. Now to tires.. I'm picking up the 18" limited wheel and want to put a beefy tire on it. My favorite look is the duratrac. I'm not OVERLY concerned with gas mileage but I would not like to see a drop over 3MPG. What tire should I choose from the following, all in 275/65/18: duratrac, bfg ko at; terra grappler. I like the sidewall design on the duratrac and terra grapplers.

I have these so I'll chime in. Mine are 255/75/17's though. Black sidewalls. Ride great, look amazing, not loud for how aggressive they are, but louder than stock obviously. My gas milage went from about 18/21 to 15/20. But the city dropped because its stop and go constantly and it has been cold. Once they get rolling the gas milage is fine but getting them going takes a lot since they're pretty heavy. :thumb3:

I dont notice any excessive noise from the tires. Traction in snow, mud, sand etc is awesome. They will probably dry rot before you wear these out.

BTW- i am running 285/65/18 load E, i would go with trail grapplers over the terra.

out of your tire choices price NOT being a factor i would buy it in this order
-BFG, i think these tires will dry rot before it wears out
-nitto trail, real nice looking and performing tire but wears fast
-GY duratrac, looks great. i have no experience with them but many on here love them.

why i said price out of equation, the BFG are EXPENSIVE!!! but they wear very very well, you'll probably get 50-60k out of them and still have tread left!

Thanks Jsmith. I have a V6 and get about 15/19.. I seem to get bad gas mileage but have an easy foot in attempt to get better mileage.. If I get these tires and drop to 11-12 city with a v6 I will be less than happy.

And gshadow- can you tell me what mileage you were getting before? I don't have a good idea what the v8 gets stock.

I am leaning towards duratrac for looks and bfg for economy reasons.

I have the duratracs in 265/75/16, very minimal MPG loss. I made sure to get myself a C rated tire for the time being. They are awesome. No regrets. Some have sidewall issues, but I have not yet. They kicked the crap out of that greasy pines mud.

I've only experienced the BFGs. They have 89k miles on them and have performed wonderfully everywhere. Don't have much tread left, so I'm going with the Cooper Discoverer AT3. These are much less aggressive than what you are looking for but have gotten good reviews around here as a good a/t.

BFGs are very pricey. I paid almost $1300 all said and done in 2011. I'm switching for this reason alone. I cannot afford them ATM.

I run the nitto terra grappler in 285-70-17. Around town I get 15-15.5 mpg. get about 2 mpg better with pure hwy.

I got rid of my MT's since I was doing more daily driving of the 4Runner than I used to. The AT's are fine fir my use. Suck in mud, but solid every where else

I meant economy after I purchase the tires. I'm fine spending ~1300 initially. Fuel economy vs the duratracs has to be better from what I am hearing. I am also after the quietest, smoothest AT (aggressive looking) tire possible. I understand I will have to compromise when going AT vs a street tire such as the Michelin LTX M/s2 which is amazing.

Also, how much were the bad 02 sensors and cats to repair?

My price tag for both cats, all 4 sensors, all head studs, all head bolts, all gaskets and labor $1425 on my 03 172,000 mile V8, truck made a ticking noise, so manifold was cracked or leaking or whatever! I figured, treat her right and she will never let me down. It has been 6000 miles and 4 months of reliable trouble free driving!!!!!!! I love her

Gotcha.. not bad. How much MPG did you gain back?

And is it possible to get a C load tire in 265/65/18 with an all-terrain style??

I am running the Nitto Terra Grappler and they are wonderful tires. I am almost at 80,000 miles on them as I keep them rotated and balanced every 4500-5000 miles. They are great in the rain, snow and mud. I am currently in the market for some more aggressive tires. I am actually choosing between the GY Duratrac load C range, Cooper ST Maxx and Kelly Safari TSR. You could also look at those tires.

I have heard great things about the Cooper ST Maxx as far as very low on road noise and great capability off road but they are so heavy and will affect your MPG. The Kelly Safari is actually made by Goodyear and cheaper. I contacted the Goodyear store in my area and they have them for $175 apiece.

If I were you I would go with the GY Duratrac in load C unless you do tons of towing or tons of tough off roading. They downfall that I have seen from the reviews of the Duratrac is the sidewalls. If you don't do tons of off roading then you should be fine. The E load tire would be overkill and you would have a stiffer ride. To be honest you can't go wrong with any of the tires you listed.

I am running 265/70r17 Terra Grapplers, and I don't really like them.

They're really heavy and stiff (E-rated), and I took a huge hit in mpgs. I'm getting about 15mpg consistently with 60% freeway 40% (distance percentages in SoCal).

Went completely the opposite direction and ordered a set of michelin LTX M/s2's. I had the cross terrains on my last 4runner and loved the quiet luxurious ride so I said why not. And I know my MPG will not be affected, and I won't have to buy another tire for ~70k.

I'll keep my eye out for a used set of duratracs and have that option to throw those on down the road when I want to play a little or switch up the look.
