Bicycle racks?

What is your preferred method for carrying bikes on your rig?

I'm thinking a hitch mount might be the most practical but I'm undecided at this point.


Suggestions for models and types are appreciated.

I have a hitch mount Thule that holds the bikes from the bottom. Very secure and very easy to load the bikes on and off. Only downside is the carrier is very heavy.

Swagman XTC. About the best there is. Not that expensive either. It's a hitch mount.

That carrier is cool!!! Ouch....it's pricey.

Bike racks are like tools, buy quality and they will last a long time. My last hitch rack lasted over 17 years only got rid of it because tires are much wider now then rack would fit.

Thanks, just ordered one. I thought I'd like the roof mounted one better but am finding out otherwise...bike is just to damn heavy to hoist up that high.

Have had a hitch mounted Yakima since 03. Very onvenient unless you want to open the hatch and then you have to lower it. I looked a lot at roof mounted on my 2001 SR5 and didn;t like the idea of hoisting a bike up there after a hard ride.

After 15 years with roof racks, I switched to a hitch rack for the 4Runner and believe that's the only way to go. I'm 6' and already used a small step for our RAV4. I could do it without but couldn't reach high enough on the bike to support it well while getting it locked down and figured it was just a matter of time until after a long ride and being exhausted that I put a bike through the sun roof. With the 4Runner, especially lifted, a roof rack is impractical at best.

When I got my 4R, I grabbed a 1Up rack and love it. I also considered a Recon Rack but there was no option for carrying fat bikes. I've ran mild trails with the 1Up without any incidents at all. The "stadium seating" rise of the racks means that it doesn't impact your departure angle too badly as it tucks tight and quickly angles up.

I would def go with the hitch mount. I think they are much easier to use and you don't have to get a step ladder out to mount your bike.

1up USA rack. I had mine for 3 years with no issue or problem.

I put mine in the cargo area. Remove the front wheel and lock the fork into a Saris Tipple Trapp. I don't have to worry about:

1. Having my bike destroyed by some moron who isn't paying attention and rear-ends me.

2. Getting my drivetrain dirty while driving on dirt roads.

3. Having my bike stolen if I stop for lunch after a ride.

I've been looking for the same truck accessories. Choosing between the bike rack offered by Thule and Yakima. I should also take note of those hitch options.

I've always gone with hitch racks because a bunch of people I know have driven roof racks into their own garages! One guy did it twice!

I have a Yakima Holdup 2. It is heavy, as stated above, but it works!

Used to have a Thule, but I like my Yakima a tiny bit better. It seems to hold the bikes in place more securely, and the edges fold up a bit for a smaller storage footprint.

I have the Hold-Up2 from Yakima as well. (also have the +2 extension). I definitely like it and it holds bikes well. It is a bit heavy, but it's solid. I also got a ridiculous deal. Had I not had the same opportunity I would have gotten the 1UP. But I don't think you can get a 4bike option. Didn't look too hard at the time

The new Thule T2 Pro XT seems to be getting good reviews. It will probably be my next rack as soon as I can save up the money. I like the 1UP too but I really like some of the new features on the Thule.
