BIG BANG, no 2WD

So,here is the issue. I started from a stop sign, maybe 25mph, and BANG. All the sudden I have no 2wd. I coasted into a parking lotmy car making a thumping noise, when I put the vehicle in PARK i heard grinding like when you would slam the vehicle from D to P. Took my foot of the brake pedal and the vehicle started rolling. P was not holding the vehicle in place. So I decided to try 4wd, guess what I can drive on 4wd, Park holds the vehicle in place car is acting normal. Got home put my wife inthe vehicle and layed beside it.I had herput the transfer case in 2wd and tranny in Drive, the drive shaft started spinning really fast and there was thumpingIthink in the rear axle but the truckwould not move. Went back to 4wd and it drove fine,I guess.

Can anyone help me.

Sounds like cv joints. Check all of them. Make your wife drive the car in 2WD and check to see if the axles spin in the rear. When it's in 4wd it's only spinning the front wheels if the cv joints in the rear failed. Easy and cheap fix if's it is (CV)

the vehicle doesnt move in 2wd. the drive shaft spins,and there si thumping in the back but therear wheels dont move.

In 4wd the drive shaft acts normal,in 2wd it spins really fast but the wheels in the back are not moving.

Im thinking the rear axle third member or the transfer case. IM LOST.

Like I said it's ur rear CV joints. They broke or loosened.

yeah, you are closer to on... the back is straight axle there are no cvs, Jinos, i think you were thinking the opposite way...

when you break an axle in front, you can take the car out of 4wheel drive and still drive away in 2wd(rear)

Skorpion you are prob right, Im thinking exactly what you are, most likely the third member, there are a few members here who have replaced theirs and would be able to tell you more definitely... could also poss be the transfer case...
 
i tried lookingup searches for rear axle and third member not comingupi with anything.can anyone steer me in the direction of how to remove the rear axle and repair the member.can it be repaired or does the whole thing need to be replaced.

You Buy a used 3rd member like i did, i got it for $225, but you gotta go to a salvage yard or something, i did not have your problem but i still replaced the 3rd member from a different issue, i did it myself. Job took 2 and a half hours with some Bull shitting and such, but i had air tools and a lift.
 
You checked the u-joints on the driveshaft to make sure they are in good shape? I have seen a driveline stay in place and spinwith caps torn off.

thanks. did u go to a local yard or did you find it online from a salvage yard.
 
My bad u guys. I always thought CV joints were the same on most vehicles. I had the same thing happen to me on 2 front wheel drive cars (honda and toyota) and it also happened to my 911 porsche recently. Everytime it was my cv joints that failed. Sorry for the bad advice. ;)

Yeah I would start here. It's the simplest and easiest to inspect and can be repaired for little $$. Then I would go on to the third. I think getting a replacement from a salvage is the best bet since a repair would quickly add up to more money.

if you want to call up Yota Yard or Jims Yota in Denver here and see if they have any 3rd members, I would be more than happy to go pick one up for you and ship it to you... I could pick it up Monday or Tues.

NEXT STEP:
I will take it apart and see where it hurts. I will keep you posted on the outcome.
 
so.....

I took apart the rear end. it turns out that one of the axle shafts broke between the wheel bearing and the ABS toner ring.

Ordered parts, next I have to get a shop to tear the shafts apart and replace bearings and seals and install a new shaft.
