I havent been on this forum in a while but I need peoples decisions. After trying to turbo this 5vzfe and realizing its many short falls and its complications and getting run around from several vendors I've decided to do my engine swap. Here is the thing I dont know which swap I want to do. I am torn between the 4.7 or 2jzgte. Please help me decide. Also I am not mechanically challenged nor do I fall short in the tools and fabrication categories. I am leaning toward the 2jz but whenever I hear a V8 I instantly raise an eyebrow. Im also open to other suggestion as long as it is a a Toyota like maybe even the 4.0???

2JZ all day long. Turbo opens up a whole new world of power possibilities, not to mention all the other benefits turbos bring. I'd love to know what challenges you ran into with the turbo on 5VZ-FE though. Have you considered the 1JZ? It's a lot more affordable and still has BEAST potential.

All very, very, very good points and its not that I ran into problems with the 5vz although mine does have 300k miles and after tearing it down decided boost wasnt going to help keep this little guy going, It was shotty vendors saying they could do this and that for me and not following through. So I was going to go with CX Racing but after looking at a friends manifold for his RX7 I wasnt impressed and was not about to be a guinea pig for them. And I have thought about the 1jz but Ive heard after about 400hp you have to upgrade the internals and I was wanting to push to 500 one day way way way way down the road.

Good luck finding a cheap JZ engine, you can do a whole 2UZ swap for less than the engine cost of a JZ engine. Unless you are some sort of super deal finder ultra person.

Op, theres a 2uz fe supercharger for sale right now in the classifieds. He claims its good for roughly 350hp and 450ft/lbs. So pull a 4.7 from an older tundra or sequoia and get that supercharger! What would a 3rd gen feel like with 350 hp??

1st off some of this is true but the v8 is better for everyday use.

1. No power loss??? The same psi drop effects turbo and n/a cars. We always make less power. Its why my dsm would run high 11's in CO, where I could run 10's with same setup at sea level. There is no way around the power drop. You can add boost but again you still are losing power, just making up for it with more boost.

2. Powerband is adjustable but most of the time its up high. In high RPMS. Where we dont use the power when wheeling.

3. No turbo increases full economy. You only lose fuel economy. Once that turbo spools its dumping fuel. Now if were where talking new Direct injection evoboost motors then yes. But not on the older ones.

4. No turbo power band is more fun. V8 tq is there, immediate, you can peddle the car and have fun. With turbo once you peddle, you out of boost, turbo needs to respool. Turbos are not the way to make good power bands.

IMO turbos are for race cars. Keep them on the race cars. This is an SUV. V8 all the way!!!!!!!!!!

I can find them all day for 2200 to 2700 and ive seen a few for less than 2 grand on supra forums.

It actually looks pretty straight forward. I can even keep my 4 wheel drive using the front sump 2JZ. And the turbos will fit just fine at least the JDM ones will I dont k now about the US ones. I would probably go single turbo anyways if i do the 2JZ. Trying to keep it under 7 grand though.

Why so much work on a budget? I mean if thats your goal I would go the v8. Turbo cars just have so much that need done and maintenance. Oil lines, vacuum lines, boost leaks, tuning issues, you name it. If you had issues turboing the stock motor an engine swap with turbos wont be much easier.

Its not that I had problems turboing the 5vz it was the problems I had finding the parts that I wanted not so much needed and I am trying to stay under 7 grand in parts not labor or anything else. I already pissed away close to 1500 on the turbo 5vz. I am also not worried about maintenance or tuning or any of that. I have at my back door a 2JZ specialist shop and toyota wiring geniuses, Tweakd Performance. The v8 on the other hand would be a lot cheaper, I'd have whatever I want instantly instead of waiting for spool. There are pros and cons to both and I am a very indecisive in this.

1. Let me rephrase, the power loss isn't nearly as great as with NA. The lag becomes greater at higher elevations though.

2. The TDI I'll be using in my swap hits full boost at 1,700 rpm.

3. What I meant by increases fuel economy is relative to an equal powered NA engine. Turbo motors can get away with smaller displacement, which translates to better economy. A 4 cyl 300 hp/ 300 tq turbo motor is going to get better mileage than a 300 hp/ 300 tq NA V8

4. This is entirely subjective, but you're wrong. It's much more exciting to drive a car with a non-linear powerband, just ask my dad.

Turbos are becoming much more commonplace. V8 is such an old American way of thinking. I invite you to drive my swap once it's finished. I think I can change your mind :D
 
I'd never pay more than 2k for a 2JZ ...Check this out!

Too bad I'm in South Carolina and the farthest I would drive is central Florida. I just dont know if I could buy an engine that I havent seen in person with my own 2 eyes. Otherwise I'd just buy one off of Ebay. Also that doesnt come with a transmission. 2200 dollars includes engine and transmission.

This is a Tacoma,but it's the same driveline etc. He even utilized an OBD2 ECU in case your state requires scantool checks during inspection:

Cliff notes:
Front sump oil pan setup (like your Aristo swap)
No body lift needed
Custom motor mounts and modified crossmember to move the drivetrain back a few inches
Shortened front driveshaft/lengthened rear
Custom AC and PS hoses
Pusher fans for cooling
