Big issue??

How major is this leaking from the cv boots, will this be very costly? I know it's due to them stretching and I don't have diff drop and not planning on it.. Just want to know if it's a big deal!

Not that big of a deal until all the grease leaks out, I'd get it taken care of soon but it's not major. The dealer would replace it for $2-300 or you could do it yourself for about half that.

Or you can reboot it for as little as $25. You can buy one piece boots from Toyota, or 2 piece boots from Autozone. I've been running a 2 piece boot for about 6 months now with zero issues.

It will only be costly if dirt/sand/small debris get in there and grind away at the cv s. On an non 4rnr i've had sand (on bridges w/ice) ruin a cv in less than 100 yards of travel. Felt like i was then riding on square tires. That added considerably to the cost of repair. So I (me) wouldn't wait. :cheers:

I just bought a '97 T4R a couple of weeks ago with 155k miles on it. After I saw this thread I figured I better check my cv boots much to my surprise the boots down by the wheels look really good but the ones up by the transfer case are torn and have been for a while there is no sign of grease anywhere. My question is how I know if I can just reboot them or if I need new axles. I'm new to 4WD vehicles and will probably have a lot more dumb questions so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well how does it sound/feel when you drive in either 2 or 4wd?

When CVs are bad you'll hear clicking/snapping sounds when either turning or when really bad all the time. :cheers:

Thanks, jgue467, I can't hear any noise while driving in eather 2 or 4wd but I get a little vibration in the steering wheel between 40 and 65 mph I just figured the tires need balancing but I plan to get new tires soon anyway.
