ok guys I've been looking all over and need help, I have a 1992 toyota 4runner with the v6. My wife came back from the store complaining that the it was hard to turn when I went out to check on it I saw something Ive never seen before the harmonic balancer had fallen off and was sitting on the front skid plate. After dropping the skid plate to get the pulley and bolt there was no damage to the pulley or the bolt which ruled out my first thought that the bolt snapped some how. Now poses the question how did this happen? Also if you feel the crank shaft where it mounts onto it feels smooth no key to line up with the grove in the pulley and no ruff spots where the key could have snapped off. SO how do I fix this is it normal to be smooth like do I just put it back together and roll on?

typically harmonic balancers are 2 pieces you may just be looking at one part of the two and the key way part is still on.

Its possible it just worked it self loose over time and that the timing belt gear has slid forward, hiding the key. If the key fell out the truck wouldant be running because it wouldnt be timed right.

(You dont have to take the timing belt off)
Make sure the balancer it tight on the shaft. If there is any play is should be replaced.
And use loctight when putting it back together.
Same thing happened to my but I caught it before it fell off. Haha. It did however, destroy my balancer. I didnt use loctight when I put the motor together, it probably lasted about 30 of hours of driving before it loosened up.
