Bilstein 5100 and FJ Cruiser Coils

I've searched and can't really find accurate answers. For my 97 4x4 V6 4Runner I'd like to get Bilstein 5100 shocks. I want adjustable but I think from what I've read only the front struts are adjustable. If this is true, what would be another high quality smooth shock for the rear that would be adjustable. I'd also like to know if the FJ Cruiser coils would work with the 5100s.

Fronts are adjustable to allow different mounting heights of the coils. In the rear the coils don't mount on the shocks, so why do you want an adjustable rear shock?

Any shock will work with FJ coils as long as the compressed and extended lengths are within the range that the coils allow.

Yeah I guess I didn't realize the way it adjusts. I have Gabriel hijackers right now in the rear. I'd like to be able to raise it up or lower it. Do 5100s in the rear with FJ coils make the rear higher?
 
I think you will get 1.5-2 inches with rear FJ coils also depends on what year/model the springs are from. Someone did a whole write up on this already. Just search for "FJ Cruiser springs on a 3rd generation". I used the write up and scored some free 5th gen 4Runner springs and got about 1.5 inches of rear lift.
 
the shock itself in the back at least doesnt affect ride height. in order to be able to adjust the ride height in the rear you would either need a set of airbags, or an adjustable coile spacer. as far as I know, no one makes an adjustable coil spacer. however they do make non adjustable coil spacers.

Well my Gabriel hijackers raise the rear up a good two inches or so. Problem is they leak air. Max psi is 200 but they'll only go up to 110 and after a day they're down to 45. I can literally raise it up or lower it when I want though (if they'd hold the pressure).
 
I'm not sure if the OP is asking about using springs from the current FJ or 90-97 FJ80 springs like many have.

FJ80 springs are going to give 3-4" at a minimum and probably more, depending on how many wraps they are.

I didn't know you could put older FJ springs on. I'm talking about the 05-15 FJ Cruiser.
 
100% yes you can use FJ cruiser springs.

And the FJ80 springs....people have lost eyes and limbs trying to snatch up a set of used ones.

A set showed up on on Phoenix craigslist once, people died, national guard was deployed. FEMA had to initiate disaster relief funds as a result.

You can get FJ80 rear coils for $65 a piece on rock auto... So those would give it even more lift?

are those LC80 springs from rock auto Toyota springs?
 
Skeptical if you can only use the springs. Reasons for this while observing both side by side in photos
- Spring perch is lower by about 1.5" on the FJ strut
- Bottom looks to be 3" or so longer on the FJ strut
- Use the top hat / mount from the 4runner with the FJ strut
- This MAY provide equal lift to the rear FJ springs even though the 4runner strut and fj strut look radically different. Working on obtaining a set to try out.

Could be WAY off. But eyeballing the two and knowing what the same lift springs do to each strut / vehicle... to me it may work out.
 
Will know on my half baked theory soon enough. Picked up a full 2005 FJ suspension setup about an hour ago :) This weekend will be busy.

So you are going to attempt to install a full FJ strut into a 3rd gen? The 3rd gen public will demand pictures pre/post if it works
 
Haha... yeah. Will do some toying around. I really should just cut the silliness and order what is known to work which is the tundra 5100's + FJ front springs. If anything, it will look really funny :) I cannot find a single post of anyone just trying the FJ strut assembly in a 4runner. Or a 4th gen in a 3rd. Lots of talk but no one has actually done it. Need to google more - likely give me the answer I am looking for.

And then I saw on gov planet some sweet humvee's going for around $7500 (some locally more or less). now my ADD is in full swing :jump: Why would I need a real hummer? For the same damn reason my wife needs so many shoes.
