just saw this randomly. am visiting beach so not a lot of repair options. thinking back, truck seemed to bounce a little longer on big highway bumps. is it crazy to drive 5 hours home on this in a few days? i doubt i could get replacement shock in time anyway and i don't want to pay for two shocks and two repairs (DIY'd the original install [with FJ coils] with help but not in a place to do that anymore).

i can replace just the one right?

you can definitely drive it with broken shocks.

Looks like it got over-extended.

Yes you can drive it that way but as you noticed it'll be bouncy.

The spring is what sets the "ride height".

I would remove the broken shock no matter what you do so that you don't cause any potential damage to anything else under there like brake lines.

If anything: find a cheap cheap cheap replacement for the meantime so you have some semblance of shock control.
 
I would at least call the local salvage yards and see if they have one you could throw in there for your drive home. Definitely remove the old one regardless like someone else mentioned above so you don’t damage anything around it.
 
Turns out some rust developed around the thread and then the shock separated there. Seller says Bilstein won't cover since it's been 9 years and there's rust everywhere, but a lot of those spots aren't rust, just oil/dirt :shrug: I'd expect them to last longer but oh well, already bought and installed the replacement. We'll see how the others do.
