Rear shock replacements bilstein 5160

Found out yesterday during a tire rotation that the rear bilstein 5160 shock is leaking on the drivers side. I picked up the set during the FJ TRD pro clearance sale 6 years ago. I put around 55-60k miles on these and light off roading.
Dont plan on changing out the the whole suspension, just the rear shocks. Looks like itll be in the price range of $500-600 most likely if the 5160 or fox 2.0 plus labor cost unless I give it a try.

What shocks would be good to replace it with?
5100?
5160 again?

I dunno...I have replaced right and left rear shocks on both a Tundra and a 4Runner. Neither one was a pain, and I'm not an expert mechanic. The ratcheting wrench is key however.

Thanks sounds like a diy project. Just not sure which shock or brand to go with yet. Like to keep it the same height .

A pair of 5160’s is cheap, and they are quick to swap yourself.

There is an updated version of the 5160’s out. Get those ones. You should be able to research what the updates are.

when I need to replace the front I plan on going with the 6112 set up , would the fox 2.0 pair well?

I do like the feel of the current ride set up, after some reading the 5100s might be tad firmer than I would like. I do little to none off roading and the fox 2.0s seem more suitable for on road.


*looks like i have the 6112 already from the FJ trd pro suspension....stopped by a local 4x4 shop hopefully receive a quote soon. sales rep said labor is about 1 hour which wouldnt be bad. The B8 5160s reservoir is larger than the current one I have, he explained the 5100s are the same shocks just without the reservoir ? Also considering the fox 2.0

I’m still running the stock struts and shocks at 130K miles.

Ride is terrible n I’ll be replacing them soon, but zero leaks from the stock shocks.

Just keep reading about leaky expensive aftermarket shocks at 40-50K.

parts will break, these were the toyota tuned shocks for the FJ cruiser. Thinking Ill stick with the 5160s for similar ride quality, the 5100s are tad cheaper.

Hardly “expensive” at $190 each.

Fox 2.0s are $350 for a pair of rear shocks. I'm very happy with mine front and rear for the price point. I did the rears myself and had a shop do the front since I have KDSS and didn't feel like waiting until I had the time to tear into it/kinda just didn't care to do it.

Install in the rear on the passenger side went easy. Drivers side the top nut was a PITA. Lot's of PB Blaster and 3 separate days/attempts and the top nut finally spun free. There really isn't much room to get a wrench on the nut and holding the shock from spinning is tough. Then, bench pressing the shock into place was fun too on a garage floor. But, it saved me the labor. I was almost just going to cut it off, but really wanted to keep the stock stuff just in case.

Long story short....It's easy. Just give yourself a week of PB Blasting those top nuts.

From bilstein :

Part #’s 25-313154 & 25-313130 have been superseded to 25-311211 & 25-325096. We starting building them in a different plant so there was part# change

I'm new to the site. In need of some help.
Not sure how to create a new thread. I'm currently installing my rear fox 2.5 remote reservoir with DSC on my 2017 4R TRD offroad. The install instructions say to install the supplied rubber spacer onto the vehicle lower mount and then connect the Fox shock using factory bolt. I do not have a supplied rubber spacer in any of the boxes. There is a 1/4 in gap between the bushing and the bolt. What do I do?! My car is in pieces, I have my moto to run and grab a part if I need. Wondering if anyone knows what part I need to buy or of it is really needed?
