Bilstein 5125 Rear Shocks Questions

Pure genius! (wish I had this tip about 2 weeks ago!)

On a related note I "built" bushings from the stock shock bottoms... cut those bushings in half and put them on top and below the shock top mount. Whether this was a good idea or not remains to be seen... I know the stock shock had bushings so there was flex in there. I am curious whether this makes the backing off process faster or slower... any thoughts?
 
Got my bilsteins today but waiting on front coils still in box #2.

Because i couldnt wait, i opened up all the shocks to examine and spoil myself.. but wondering with the bilstein 5125s one box came with some "metal sleeves"?
anyone know what those are for?
it has 2 sleeves im sure once i start to install i might figure it out, but just wondering if anyone who installed wanted to give me a heads up to what it is used for..
 
Yeah that rear shock install was about half of the time spent doing my lift. And caused me the most pain. I ended up using a ratchet on the bottom to hold it and just getting the lock nut on top down. Although I haven't checked to see if they've loosened although I've gotten no indication while driving that they have.
Very comfy shocks though! xD
 
sweet thank you for your feedback, did you happen to get that in your bilstein 5125 box as well? the metal sleeves?

there is these two metal sleeves, but i only got em with one shock box.. any uses for em?

I don't have any idea what those sleeves were for. I was scratching my head at them too. They went in the trash. Hopefully they weren't important...
 
When Toytec Ships the 5125's those sleeves should already be in the bushings for the upper shock mount. Then the stem adapter goes through the sleeve. If the sleeves are already in the upper shock bushings with the stem adapter then you just got an extra set. I'd just check that you have sleeves on both of the upper bushings. The lowers don't use the sleeves.

About to start my install soon, hopefully.
Wondering any specific direction the adapter should face?
Meaning the eye stud adapter on the top. Does the shock tend to move left to right or front to back?

I faced mine in the direction that it was easiest to tighten. I don't think it makes a difference, but I could be wrong.
 
thank you everyone for your feedback. finished the 5125s and OME 891s today. was actually much easier than i thought. i dont know if the 2000s were slightly different then my 97s or if its because this was my third 4runner changing the rear suspension on but even with the eye to stud bracket everything went smooth.

i used a 24mm 6 point deep socket from sears craftman to have it work flawlessly. i used a 1/2 in ratchet to get the nut down as far as possible, then holding the deep socket up top i switched to a impact with another 24mm deep socket 6 point preferably over the 12 point due to it being less prone to slipping or stripping the bolt.
so using the impact on the actual bracket, i held the top straight and used the impact below on the welded nut to spin the bracket up towards the upper shock mount.

if its confusing for anyone to understand i can take photos to explain for anyone who is interested. After doing this install myself and reading through the information out there; realized there isnt that much information out there so i dont mind helping the next guy for a smooth installation.

It was easy enough i did it on my own, although frustrating at certain times and a second pair of hands would have been helpful its definitely doable on your own.

I put a pair of vise grips on the bracket and went to town on the top. They haven't come loose. I did lose the bolt that goes through the eyelet of the shock however.

Why did you loosen the bolt through the eyelet?

Lol. I didn't losen it, I LOST it. Somehow the nut on that bolt rattled off and I completely lost that bolt. Got a replacement and put some loctite on both sides. Been solid since.
