Bilstein 5160 Short Travel?

Installed 5160s in the rear of my truck today with Icon 2" springs and we were surprised to see that they were about the same length as the OEM shocks (only a 1/4" taller) We had to use a floor jack on the rear axle to compress the springs in order to bolt down the top of the shock. Anyone else surprised by this? Seems like it would severely limit articulation off-road. Picture below:

I have them and have had no issues off road. I guess maybe under severe conditions something like icon or OME would do better.

I think there is more travel in the 5160's than the OEM's.....

Bilstein 5160 Series Stock Mount Remote Reservoir Shocks are direct-fit to each specific vehicle application, avoiding the fabrication generally associated with being able to run a high performance reservoir shock. The monotube shocks feature a 46mm digressive piston with self-adjusting deflective disc valving. Benefits of the reservoir include increased cooling capacity and increased shock travel.



If you need more articulation than that, you need a LT suspension.
I think you will be fine unless you are doing something "out of the ordinary".

Keep in mind that the shock is the limiting factor of suspension droop, not the driveshaft or links. So it's normal to have to jack up the rear end in order to get those shocks back into position to be bolted back in.

Stock should be about 22.5 extended length ~8.4 of shock travel... An LT shock is about 28.5 ~ 11.5 of shock travel. There are packaging constraints for extension... With the 28.5 you lose about 2" of compression and must run extended bump stops. Shock travel does not equal articulated travel... BTW

I have 14" travel shocks on my trail rig and it requires that the rear shocks mount on a hoop as high as the bedside... You could never get a shock like that in a 5th gen... You would have to cut it all up not to mention completely change up the layout of all the links and truss the axle housing.

BTW, one more tidbit of information. If you just run trails and do low speed offroading.... Extension/Drop is all that really matters to improve capability.
