Bilstein down! Sad face ensues.

I beleive the geometry is wrong to use the Tundra Bilstiens. Has nothing to do with weight.

I know I've had one fail where the top cap was broken apart. I now think my second is failing. Believe its more commen for it to damage when extremely cold.

I believe the setup causes the strut to top out hard, and in a way the shock was never designed.

I've never been a fan of the Tundra/Bilstein set-up.

I was a big fan of the LC/Tokico Green rear combo, but not the LC/LC Stock strut. Tokico's never held up, but the LC's are too firm.

I have a manaul, so truck is a little lighter than most.

Yes, if you run tundra bilsteins, you have to be careful that they aren't topping out. It took me a while to learn this. I have replaced three tundra bilsteins in 4 years due to cracking at that bottom weld
 
There is no difference in geometry once installed on the 4runner. The two side by side are almost identical.

By topping out do you mean over extending the shock ?
 
The spacers lift caused that because when they lowered the top mounting point they did not raise the bump stops. This explains it in great detail.

Sounds like people need to check the suspension travel on the front of their lifted trucks.

It's probably hard to do (since the front ends are so damned stiff and don't like to flex) but jack the front wheel up until it bottoms out, and then see if it was the bump stop on the lower arms that bottomed out (good) or it was the shock (bad).

If it is the shock that is acting as the new bump stop, there's no way it's going to survive getting stressed like that for long. It's going to bend or break.
 
By topping out do you mean over extending the shock ?

Kind of. Its not that the shock is over extending, but its hitting the top of its travel harshly after compressing. IE. if you go over a speed bump quickly, you can feel it compress and then spring back and clunk as it tops out. This puts a lot of stress on it and will cause it to fail eventually.

Thats similiar to how mine failed and feel the second is going the same way.

It appeared even the retaining clip was damaged as the black cap was coming off the top of the shock.

I just bought a new one knowing what Bilistein woud say (wrong application). I fear my second is now failing too as it makes a similar noise when cold.
