Bilstein fit question:

In the Bilstein 5100 shock family, are there multiple parts numbers that fit different applications? Or are they all the same?
Can a 5100 rear off a different vehicle, say a Chevy truck, fit a 3rd gen?
What about the front adjustable 5100?

Also, what's the rear difference between the 5100 and 5125 for the rear?

I've be browsing craigslist and found a few. One guy is selling the 5100 front D558 and rear 5125 for $300 for all 4, new in the box.

There's a few others for sale in my area that aren't off toyotas.

I'm not super expert on it, but i know there's a difference in mounting hardware (stud vs ring, etc) and a difference in length, both at full compression and full extension.

I have no idea, however, if that can be overcome. I have been told that tundra 5100s will fit on our t4r with as low a coil as the '99 talls.

How do the 5125 compare to the 5100 in the rear? I noticed that the 5125 is what Toytech includes in one of their lift kits.

I would assume that Toytech needs a specific length (5125) shock for their kit. The vehicle specific (5100) shock for the 4Runner is probably too short for the kit.

Actually, the 5100 front strut you want to use for the 4Runner has 5 settings (this is the Tundra 5100 model; see my previous post that has a link to the part numbers). The Tacoma model only has 3 settings.

From everything I've read, you do NOT want to use Tacoma Bilstein 5100's for lifting the 4Runner. You want to use the Tundra model!

Why is this? You do realize that the 95-04 Tacoma uses the EXACT same Bilstein that our 4runners use don't you. Same part number, same valving, and same length. I've been running these for over a year and couldn't be happier.

Actually, the 5100 front strut you want to use for the 4Runner has 5 settings (this is the Tundra 5100 model; see my previous post that has a link to the part numbers). The Tacoma model only has 3 settings.

The Bilstein 5100 D558's are valved for our 4runner'ss and Tacoma's. Overtime people have figured out that the Tundra Bilstein 5100 B-6929's will fit as well.

So what you're saying is that Toytec is selling people Bilstein's that don't work. Shit...I guess I should take mine off and return. Along with half the people on here!

But Sonoran Steel specifically warns against the Tacoma (D558) model, which is another reason I went with the Tundra model.

Of course SS uses a custom 5100 shock for their setup, but it's similar to the Tundra model.

You are spreading misleading information by telling people the D558's won't work when they CLEARLY do.

You do realize that half the people on herearen running the D558's don't you? Don't you think that you should let everybody body know SS is bashing another product to try to boost their sales? SS is claims theirs are so much better because they have 2 more settings, come on! They also claim that their bushings are bigger than regularly manufactured ones? Would that mean their struts are actually taller since they have larger bushings? Or did they shorten the length to make up for the larger bushings? You should also notice that they don't publicize the part number so people can't call them out on the bs they're feeding.

Glad I didn't get suckered into that marketing ploy.

I don't know what you want me to say. If you have a problem with SS then maybe you should take it up with them. There are a ton of people that have been extremely happy with their setups from them. I didn't want to spend that kind of money, so I did something different on my own.

The intention of this thread is to give the OP some information that he can use to make an informed decision. I hope I have given him some more options to consider that I did not see mentioned in this thread.

I have the Taco 5100s and set to the lowest notch with 99 tall springs and love the ride. The weight of the Taco front end is more comparable to the 4runner so the valving is most likely tuned more appropriately for the 4runner rather than the heavier Tundra. Also, for the longest time the Tundra 5100s were sold out everywhere due to Bilstien moving factories so the only thing available was the Tacos which work perfectly. I cannot comment on the SS BS.
