Bilstien 5100 with OME 890

Fellow Runners,

First off thanks to everyone on this forum. So much info out there, loving it. I did bunch of searching and have seen threads about this specific topic but never got a concrete answer. I'm sure one of you can help and it would be greatly appreciated. Also, sorry if this is Noob question (this is my first attempt at a self installed lift)

I have a 2002 4Runner, 4wd, center locking, sport package.

I ordered a set of Bilstein 6112's (part number 47-258624) for my front and 5100's (part number 24-249966) for my rear. I plan on pairing the 5100's with OME 890's, but the shock is saying 2" max lift while the coil is saying 2"-2.5" lift. Will this be a problem? I would like to set the front at the top clip (2.3" lift advertised). I would like to get the most out of both shocks without sacrificing ride quality, and I dont want a saggy butt.

Questions:
1. Will I need to order something else like a spacer if I want to keep the front at its top setting?
2. Do I need to order a 2" lift coil like the OME 906's?

I also already ordered:
1. SS Diff Drop spacers
2. Front upper sway bar end link bushings
3. Front extended brake line
4. SS Adjustable Panhard bar
5. Rear Extended brake line
6. Extended parking brake bracket.

Also, any tips or suggestions welcome.

It could be a little bit of a problem.
By that, I mean that the shocks will work, but you won't have as much droop(down travel) as you could.
Unless you're racing Baja or bombing huge speed bumps every day- you won't experience shock failure from the shock topping out all the time.
The weight/accessories you carry also plays a large role. If you have anything over stock weight, I would say those shocks are actually the right length.
The 906 would definitely be a different beast. Depending on the weight- and how you like your rig to sit- the 906 may be a better option. The rear sits noticeably higher with the 890, so- if you have no added weight- you'll be a little higher in the rear with the front set at 2.3".
With the 906, I would expect it to sit pretty close to level- without any added weight.
I'm sure more guys will chime in, and take all of our opinions with a grain of salt.

In general, I have found the rated lift size on shocks to be lower than what they actually support. A 2" lift shock will be nearly bottomed out on a stock height vehicle, so a 3" lift on that shock will be perfectly fine. I am running 5100s with my OME 891s and airbags. Its a great setup. Honestly, if you're going to have any weight in the back, might as well go with 891s. They are kinda soft with the 5100s, they are fairly soft shocks. If I don't keep my airbags pumped up (have to fill them once a week) when I stop or accelerate quickly the ass bounces up and down, so the shocks are honestly valved a little on the soft side. I'd rather have springs that are a little stiffer and shocks that are soft on bounce, but firm rebound. This combo works well.

Also, what springs are you going to be running?
I've never been a fan of just compressing the stock spring to make it lift higher, you're spending the time and money to do it, do it right and get lft springs for the front, don't compress and reuse a worn out spring.

Thanks for chiming in guys. Extremely helpful first hand experience advice.

Thanks! So what I'm hearing is that it will work, wont be dangerous, I'm just sacrificing down travel, correct? For now, just sticking with stock bumpers till they get too beat up to stay on. I don't mind the front rake, just the saggy butt is not what I desire. As far as getting more down travel, any shocks would you recommend that you've had experience with or have heard good things about?

Thanks! I agree 1000% with the "do it right, don't cut corners". I'm taking my time and assembling the pieces needed then diving in. Although I welcome all solutions and advice. For the front I ordered the Bilstein 6112 Kit which comes with coils designed for our specific vehicles. Check em out, link at the bottom. I've heard nothing but good things about them. Also, when you installed your 890's did you experience any settling?

Also, anyone else have thoughts or first hand experience, please chime in.

I did not like the 5100s paired with my 890s. I ran them for a week and put my old firm OME's back in (which are to stiff unless i have 300lbs back there, FWIW). The 5100 were so sloppy. There is a good dip in the freeway on my way home, the OME bounce up once and down once then settle. The 5100 bounced 6 times on the same bump at the same speed. I would not recommend the 5100s and 890s but that is my opinion.

That's interesting. I started with 890's and OME shocks and didn't like them. Switched to the 5100's and have been happier. I will say the OME's did feel slightly better on washboards.

Oh and lift amount will also depend on the year of your rig. On yours, it will be more like 3".

if you are concerned about 5100 not being long enough for the 890 springs, I'm not sure about the combo, but limiting straps is an easy set of insurance to save shocks and other linkage items.

i just ordered the 6112/5100 combo with 906 springs. i prefer stiffer spring, and fewer other mods required.

if you lift 3" in back, perhaps consider a panhard relocation kit instead of adjustable panhard? adjustable panhard will center your axle, but if you don't have a flat panhard at rest, things can get wonky in travel, especially with a softer spring.

here's a question for you... as i look at the 5100 in back... compressed 5100 = 12.9". I think I read that compressed OEM shock is 12.4". I'm thinking that I (we) would need 0.5" bump stop extension. maybe consider that on your list? can anyone confirm those measurements?

According to Sonoran Steel, a 13" compressed shock is still fine without a bump stop extension.

I installed the 6112 kit (9/8) along with the 5100/890 in the runner this weekend. Feels a little squirly in the back over some bumps, but overall very happy with it. No question an upgrade from stock. Thanks for the input from T4R family.

that squirlyness may be coming from the track-bar / panhard-bar being not level. some on here have installed the correction kit to make it level and scream wonderful things as a result. I bought the kit, waiting to weld it on till after I swap to a e-locked rear axle.

food for thought.

I'm confused, everyone is just saying 5100. There are 3 different lengths you can order that I know of, maybe more. You have 3rd gen specific, Tundra & 4th gen rears. 4th gen being the longest & thats what Steve includes in his SS kits.
You can look at Wheelers website, they have the measurements. I would only run 4th gen or Tundra 5100's with 3" or more lift.

But then again I think this question should have been asked BEFORE the shocks were ordered.

I ordered the 0"-2" (24-249966) because I paired it with the OME 890's (2"-2.5"). I can order the longer 5100's (4R5100) no sweat.

I have an 02 and feel like my rear shocks were blown and sagging which is why I prob ended up getting so much lift. What you think? I went from around 19" to 23". (dont have the exact numbers on me at the moment). Others I see are ending up with a final height in the 23" zone.

Would you recommend going with the longer (4R5100) for the rear?

The rear springs are what gives the height. Shock absorbers do just that. Absorb the impacts from the road surface.

And I'd go with the longer ones.

Hepar: Sorry, mispoke. Coils were mushed. Also, also, just looked at your build thread briefly...NICE
Scramble, yours is sick too. Thanks for the link on the longer shocks.

Do you fellas think it unsafe for me to run the shorter 3rd gen specific 5100's with my OME 890's? Mostly pavement until I ship it to another island where it will be going from the Beach to the Mountain on weekends. Will prob not much rock crawling at all like some of the other rigs here. Just need more ground clearance and want a smooth ride on dirt roads.

Just starting on this journey of building and really appreciate all of the input.

Thanks, I dont think it's unsafe but it will limit travel & possibly bottom out. I always thought the 890's gave 3" of lift, if you have a saggy 02 it could be 4" with no weight. Where are you getting the lift dims from?

I read about 100 lift threads over 7 months before I bought my kit. LOL
It was easier to just buy the Sonoran Steel kit & I replaced the 890's with LC 8 wraps. (never installed the 890's) The 4th Gen/FJ 5100 rears seem to be the longest (And widest) 5100's.
