binhsterbinh's build thread

I've been on this forum for 3-4 years now and am just now getting around to creating a thread for my '00 SR5 V6 4x4. I've learned a wealth of information on this forum, so thank you and props to all of you there that have posted on this forum.

First up will be the installation of new seats:

Installed Mastercraft Baja RS seats with lumbar and heat add over the weekend. Took longer than I thought. I purchased Corbeau brackets made for 96-02 4Runner to simplify install. Ended up grinding off the Corbeau fixed seatbelt mounts and bolting directly to a nut pre welded into the beefy Mastercraft seat frame. This allows the seatbelt buckle to slide with the seat like the factory seats. The Corbeau seatbelt buckle mount welded to the bracket frame was simply unusable for me and was probably one my biggest setbacks during install as far as time. Overall, the bracket is well made and sturdy.

Other mods required include drilling new holes into the Corbeau frame and widening the tracks 3" total to match the base of the Mastercraft seat. I added about 3/8" of additional shims to the front of the seat to give more of a rake.

Test fitting the Corbeau bracket.

Ran the wire harness under the carpet between the seat and center console/cup holder area and tapped into the 12v accessory outlets just under the stereo (light pink wire tapped) with 7.5A inline fuse.

Test fit bolting seat bracket tracks to the seat frame. I ended up putting about 3/8” to 1/2”of washers between the tracks and seat frame on the forward mounting positions to get more rake in the base. This allowed for more lower thigh support.

Passenger seat test fit. Dozens of back and forth trips lugging seat from the bench to the truck. On one test fit, I stripped out the front bolt and lost 2 hours trying to repair the mistake. Ugh!

Corbeau tab welded to seat frame for the seatbelt buckle is too snug between center console and side of seat in my case. You can see in photo how tight things were using the trying to use the bracket tab. The fixed buckle position from Corbeau was really annoying and made fastening the seatbelt a pain depending on seating position. Understandably, many aftermarket seats are not robust enough to mount a buckle to, so I get why Corbeau adds this mounting tab.

Skipping the Corbeau seatbelt buckle tab, I decided to mount directly to the Mastercraft seat itself which has a welded 3/8" nut in the frame already there from the Mastercraft factory. Now the seatbelt buckle can slide with the seat instead of being fixed. On the driver side, I ended up using an 4.5” angle grinder to saw off the Corbeau Seat belt tab altogether as it was interfering with the seatbelt buckle mounted to the seat frame.

Love the seats. How long have you had them? Any wheeling trips with them?

Nothing yet. I have only taken it for one drive for 2-3 miles. The suspension mechanism inside doe seem to help over the rough pavement encountered. Speed bumps feel more cushioned too. The main reason for purchasing these seats is to save my back and bum during road trips or anything over 1 hour of continuous driving.

long term update?

Cool build, and sorry for necro-posting. I am looking at upgrading seats and was reading your build thread. Any updates on how the seats are holding up and how you like them?

Seats have been holding up just fine over 7 years and 40,000 miles. No rips or tears and the foam has been holding up. Some people complain that the seat bolsters are basically metal frames wrapped in vinyl and therefore don’t give when they’re hopping in and out. I’ve always made conscious effort to lift myself over them on any car I drive to prevent premature wear.

If I did it again, I’d have spent extra money to get the same seats but with the adjustable headrest option available at time of ordering. I’m not sure that’s an option for new orders anymore though.
