Black Magic Build Thread

Once again, no mods to report really. Only thing I've done since I got back from moab is to extend the rear diff breather (you can see why in pics below). Besides that I've been working on getting the '96 back to stock. Almost there! I'll be posting it for sale here shortly I hope. Oh and good news to report, the new 4runner is officially paid off! :party:

Gone on a few camping and wheeling trips since being back. Some pictures are below. Steezemcqueen and I also did a photo-shoot with Joel Moranton from 4WD Toyota Owner Magazine. Keep an eye out for our rigs in upcoming issues!

Very cool, does your puppy usually ride in the the floor board, passenger seat, or the back on wheeling trips? Ive got a 10 week old Red Heeler thats never sure where she wants to be in the truck!


Also, how do you like the Geolanders? I noticed you and Glen both still run them.

He likes to sleep on the front floor board. Not sure how he does it when we are wheeling. Ha! Otherwise he prefers riding shot gun. He's only been in the back once and he didn't seem to mind that at all. Pretty soon he won't be able to fit in the front.

I really like the geolanders. I'm currently trying to decide between them or the Toyo MTs. I get pretty good pricing on the Toyo's through my work, otherwise I would definetly get a new set of Geolanders. They are my favorite tire I've run so far.
 
The black runner hasn't gotten much attention lately. Before the end of the week I'm hoping to have the LR UCA's installed, replace the inner tie rods, steering rack bushings and guide, lower ball joints, and new tires! We'll see how much of that I can really get done... lol

The old '96 has been getting a lot of attention however. Got her almost back to stock. I'm going to put her up for sale here soon and see what I can get. If I can't get anything that I'm happy with I'll take the S/C off and put it on the black one. Not sure what kind of market there is for a Supercharged '96 4runner with 270K miles. lol

Talk about a Franken4runner!




 
Holy crap - reverse transformation! Looks good though Jeff! You might as well just pull the SC and sell it separately. Prob put more money in your pocket in the end. Unless you just tack on $1k+ to your listed price for the truck and not budge.

it's so sad to see the truck I idolized for so long reverse-built...I molded my truck around yours, I had it set as the wallpaper on my computer for so long...wow

He will still fit in the front floor board... I have a two y/o male black lab, around 80lbs, who prefers to ride there in my Tacoma. It's a small space and he feels more secure down there, not flying around in the back seat just lays his head on the seat and sleeps. You've got a great looking dog there!!

Your new build is EPIC! I just read through the entire thread; it was neat to see one build come up and the other go down.

Here is a little update. I do have some mods to report, but first some wheeling pics from Spring Creek.


















I've been needing new tires pretty badly. Before hand I needed to get my alignment fixed. I also did some maintenance stuff. New lower ball joints, outer tie rods, and steering rack bushings. I took the old Light Racing UCA's off my '96. They had some rust on them so I decided to grind them down and repaint them. I also figured I might as well put in some new upper ball joints while I'm at it.





Now that the alignment was taken care of, so it was finally time for tires! I decided to stick with the 305/70/16's and go with the Toyo Open Country M/T's. So far so good!



And lastly I put some ICON shocks on the rear. They ride awesome! Haven't gotten a chance to flex them out yet, but the ride on road is great!

 
Nice Jeff! Damn I was supposed to go wheeling today too, it got postponed til tomorrow. Your pictures aren't helping my patience lol.
 
The rig is looking amazing! Its so clean. I love the amount of travel you get out of the rear. Is that more so from the 851s or the upper links or both?
 
im surprised you didn't stay with the geolander's! well now you got new tires you can make it out for some snow wheeling!

No link unfortunately, but if you call them they will make you any length shock in any style that you want. Not cheap though... Heck I didn't want to spend the $ on remote reservoirs. They would be cool, but I'm not exactly desert racing with this thing. hahaha!

It's more a combination of the length of the rear shocks and the rear sway bar endlinks. You can either completely remove your rear sway bar, or put longer endlinks on there. The rear sway bar significantly limits articulation.
