black smoke from tail pipe and rough idle

So i did a tune up on my truck 1995 4runner 3.0

changed the spark plugs and wires and cap and a new k&n filter.

before i changed these, it wasnt running %100 prefect, but it was in running good condition, and ran good, but not the best.

when i bought this truck two years ago, it had a slight leak from the valve cover.

but besides the point, i changed everything, but now it running rich and i dont know why, i made sure the timming was good, i changed spark plugs and wires, and cap, and cleaned the living shit out of my 02 sensors, and cleaned the egr valve, made sure there was exhaust leaks, made sure each spark plug had a spark ( locate autoparts store, has a tool were you can hook one side to the plug and one side to the boot, and if the light goes and flashs, means its hitting and has a good spark ) checked every spark plug and wire with the ohms meter, everything was good.

i really have no idle what happen, its not doing so good. i miss my yota.

it has a rough idle that jumps from 300rmps to 500rmps, and puffs black smoke when im on the gas pedle.

any idles?

Black smoke is unburned fuel. I bet you have a spark plug wire crossed.

Also - what spark plugs did you use? Our 4Runners only like Denso/NGK OEM plugs. I can tell you this from experience!

Yes Iv checked the spark plug wires and made sure they weren't crossed, millions of times

And bwd wires, the other ones did not work and spark plugs I used ngk the basic ones

There NGK basic and the number is 2560 and BKR5ES

And how can a bad tps cause black smoke?

A bad TPS could be telling your computer that the throttle is more open than it is, causing it to dump fuel that you aren't pulling enough air to burn.

That makes prefect sence, I never thought about that! And is there any way to test it? With a volt meter or a ohms?

Not really bad tps or leaking injectors are the only options and tps is easy to check

so i went to the junk yard yesturday and got three tps and tested them when i got home. and they were all throwing all differnt ohms and so i put all three on, and they were all three doing differnt things and idling alot better then before and no black smoke. but theres a check engine light that its code 31 ( AIR FLOW METER signal (Vacuum Sensor signal). and i have no idea what that means, besides a vacuum leak somewhere, i couldnt find a vacuum leak and it back fires sometimes when im on the gas.

and when the tps is all the way up, thats the only time the check engine is on. but when its all the way down, it idles light shit with black smoke.


any ideas? maybe i should buy a brand new tps?

Was the TPS in spec according to the FSM? If not try that. I would buy a brand new TPS in my opinion just cause I know its new. An easy way to test that a TPS is bad is unplugging it and seeing if the idle gets better (you wont be able to rev). Our obd1 sometimes wont throw codes when something is bad so theres that.

Yea but one of those pins weren't, they were all over the place, but I'll try the way to test like you did, and buy a new one

I forgot to mention that the truck has to be running when you unplug the sensor. (truck might not start).

I hope the TPS is your problem...I know I hate it when I buy stuff and it does nothing to fix the problem

no you were right, i unplugged the tps and it still started, just couldnt give it gas, unless it was from under the hood.

i bought another tps, it sorta helped my problem no more black smoke, but now it has a rough idle, after i gave it a nice 20 miles hard drive on the freeway. and i put new stp treatment in.

so i think so wires come off, since there new.

unless someone else has a idea?

What you mean?

As for the rough idle, you can check the ignition timing. With the terminals crossed(Te1 and e1?) it should be 10* btdc as a base timing. And check to see that the throttle body (butterfly plate) is clean.

None of that stuff is bad then pressure test the fuel system and replace fuel filter? Thats all I can think of for rough Idle right now. Let us know what happens and if anything I will go break out my FSM and give a check list.

after the first good run on the free way after i install new plug wires, they sometimes come off. witch one did, and now it has a better idea, and i replaced the fuel pump and fuel flitter, and cleaned the butterflie opener.

i still dont know how to fix the code 31. its annoying

if i have the tps adjusted all the way up, it has that code on, and if i put my foot on the gas pedle, it will die and back fire. if i have the tps set in the middle it doesnt back fire and runs good, just has a stupid check engine light on ( code 31 )

Sounds like you have a plug wire in the wrong spot
