Blacked-out Emblems *now with pics*

Another question for you guys, hope you're not getting sick of me ;):

I was browsing through the 3rd Gen gallery and noticed some of you guys have blacked out the emblems on your rigs.

What's the process for this? I know you can take them off using dental floss and a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive, correct? And then I'm just guessing you spray paint the emblems black and reattach?

Thanks for the response, that writeup will help a lot. I think I'm gonna go with flat black though, I like that look better. Or I might try out a gloss black too and compare, we'll see. Now I just need to find a free weekend to get that done, hmm.
 
Finally got around to doing this mod. Damn school kept taking up all my time, but I guess we do go to college to "learn" or something like that.

Just waiting for the second coat of flat black to dry before putting on the clear coat and then they'll finally be on my runner tomorrow!

I'm reattaching them with 3M emblem adhesive. It's a glue that's apparently designed for exactly this, among attaching a few other things.

To make sure they're in the same spot I outlined each emblem in masking tape before taking them off. But when I got them off there was unfortunately still a good amount of adhesive residue still on the car. I've tried everything I can to get it off but I haven't been able to fully remove all the adhesive. I did get the bulk of the old dried glue off though. So in the end the masking tape wasn't really necessary because the adhesive residue outlines where the emblems go.

I had thought about leaving them off but since I couldn't get the residue completely off I just decided to put them back on rather than spend hours picking away at the old glue. I am gonna leave the "Toyota" badge off though.

How did you reattach yours?

I'm a little worried that the glue might ooze out the sides when I put them back on and then be impossible to get off or something.

I used that 3M emblem adhesive too. Just dont use too much. It doesnt take that much of it to get them to stick back on.

Ok sounds good. So you just squeezed out a little bit along the outline of the back of the emblem? Or did you not even cover all of the back and only applied the adhesive in a few areas.
 
I just used a dot or two on each letter. If you play with it a little bit before you put it on there you'll find out how sticky it is. It really doesnt take much.
 
wish i would have known about the liquid and saved alot of trouble with doing it with the tape.

looks good though!
 
How many clear coats did you guys do?

I think I might have sprayed too much on the 4R part of the 4Runner emblem because it bubbled up a little at the bottom and now it's a little lighter at those spots than on the rest of the emblem. :mad: I'm hesitant to put another coat on because I don't wanna make it worse, or maybe it'll cover it up?

If you havent put the emblems back on yet....i used a plastic razor blade and adhesive remover to get the glue residue off. but if they are back on this is a little too late.
 
i did 3 coats of the black and 6 coats of clear, but i have a lot of free time i am gonna guess that 2 or 3 coats of clear should suffice. Just make sure you allow enough time for the clear to dry and cure maybe a full day

Yeah I just put on my second clear coat and I'm gonna let it sit for the next day or so.

Any suggestions on how to fix those 2 spots in the pic I posted?

And since I'm OCD and things have to be perfect, how would I go about removing the paint should I decide to do it all over again? Would rubbing alcohol do the trick or would I need to get turpentine?
