block heater and remote start #'s

rather than bring up an old thread I have some questions
I am moving to Alaska

many have suggested a block heater, yet the ones on amazon don't have great reviews.....did Toyota make one for the v6 ? Is there a brand that you can recommend

Remote starter. I did a search and most come up with 4th gen and above.
Several have told me I should have one and viper makes them, but I go to their website and use the locate a dealer. Called that local dealer twice and have not returned my calls with a price to install.

Other good brands ?

The Canadian Toyota parts sites do have them but will not ship to the US. There is an aftermarket one available made by Katz Heaters. From past research and actually physical comparison it does not fit. So don’t buy the Katz one. I’ve had them in my trucks for 2 years now and it is definitely noticeable and helpful. About 2 gallons of coolant come out. And it is kinda a pain to put in but I’ve done worse I guess. As far as remote starts I looked into them but I don’t want to splice and cut wires. I’d want something that is plug and play like some newer vehicles but couldn’t find one available so I didn’t buy one.

I carry 2 keys so then I can lock it. I really wish there was a plug and play remote start cuz I would’ve bought one immediately. But I think the block heater is more helpful and beneficial to the vehicle while a remote start is just for comfort.

I've had remote starters on both my 2cnd gens and my 3rd gen.
I've also had them on several other vehicles going back 20-25 years.
They work just fine if installed correctly. I've always installed my own.

DEI owns most of the remote start companies including Viper.
I have had a couple of vipers and they work well.

If you get them installed by a place that does them regularly you shouldn't have any trouble.

A 2 way is nice as you know it's running and if the doors are locked.
Also the range is better.

Also if it's cold and you can't plug it in you can always start it once or twice a day without leaving the house.
 
That Toyota block heater is very well made, thick brass(bronze) type material. It should outlast your 4runner. The other cheaper brands are made out of thin pressed steel and will not give the same lifespan before leaking.

Also consider a stick on oil pan heater such as this:https://www.amazon.ca/Canadian-Pola...GMDVBF9J2PA&psc=1&refRID=TCX02J3S7GMDVBF9J2PA

Not that you should buy this one, they are cheaper at an auto store. They make a big difference as your engine will have nice warm oil to circulate on startup. The Toyota block heater will not warm the oil pan much if any at all. You don't need a big one, 75 to 125 watts should be enough. You can also stick one on the tranny oil pan if you have an auto.

Then with a battery blanket like this https://www.amazon.ca/Zerostart-2800063-Electric-Battery-Approved/dp/B002UNASS4 you'll be ready for -40 degrees. Just run all the cords to a heavy 3 foot long extension cord. Tie the cords neatly in behind the grill and have the one big heavy cord coming out.

Is it worth buying a heater for the oil pan and the transmission pan? I don't live in a cold climate, just asking for posterity's sake.

It's pretty common to run the whole set up here. It sure makes a difference in how they crank and how they sound when they fire up. Ever try to pour a bottle of motor oil at -40 degrees? Even synthetic is surprisingly thick.

I think it's worth the investment if its a car you care about and want to keep. And to add, every auto parts store keeps the heat pads, they are popular.
 
My plow truck has a block heater, onboard battery charger, battery heat blanket, a battery disconnect, and a pad heater since it sits a lot on my family’s property. But when we need to use it to clear the road I made sure to pretty much guarantee it starts everytime. Every truck in my family at least has a block heater. We only plug it in when it consistently goes below zero for a time. The last few days I haven’t plugged it in.

have never used these guys before, mostly camelback. Camelback does not have it. So looked at ordering from the supplier you list and they mention discount codes ….is there a code you know of ?

I do not know of any codes actually. I looked around at most of the other online retailers and also tried my local dealership. Gave them the part numbers and they all came up with nothing. So I bought from the guys listed above and had no issues with them.

Trdpartrs4u is a dorky name, but they sell a lot of stuff other places don't. I've also ordered a lot of parts from them (it's part of Toyota of Dallas) and they have good pricing.

It’s a dorky name but I always remember it which means they did something right.
 
I was impressed. I know it is a small order, but within an hour was told it has been shipped and gave me the tracking number.
