you can get on toyota owners website, type your info in, and see if there are open recalls for your vehicle.

sign up, login, scroll to the very bottom of the screen. under resources click safety recalls & service campaigns. it will tell you right there if you have any open recalls

I'm pretty sure the blown head gasket recall was due to some trucks getting improper torque on the head bolts during assembly. If yours has lasted 178,000 miles, it's a good bet there was nothing wrong with how it was assembled and your head gasket blew because old trucks blow head gaskets. Don't be suprised if the dealer laughs at you when you ask to have the recall performed.

I am looking to replace my timing belt on my 98 V6 4 Runner. It has about 178,000 mi. I just bought it a few months ago and know that the timing belt needed to probably get done. I am having a friend do it with the water pump for about $400.
The HEAD GASKET was the other thing I was concerned about. I went and called Toyota and gave them my vin, thinking they would do it for free and they said it didn't have a recall on my 4 Runner! Is this something I should be concerned about? I am not having any issues with it yet. I just don't want to have to deal with something like that on a whim. I don;t want it to blow and then be screwed!

Dont care what the dealer told you..... it will blow. just a madder of when.... all the 3vze 3.0 motors are prone to blowing the head gaskets..... Just a flawed design...

The head gasket recall was for early years of the 3VZE motor, which came in some 1st gen and 2nd gen 4Runners. Your 3rd gen has the 5VZE, which is no more prone to blowing a gasket than any other.

Is this recall still a thing? I called Toyota of Redlands and they said it no longer exists but since no one really knew what I was talking about I kind of get the feeling the guy was full of shit

Sorry I can't help you with your situation but I'm pretty sure you can find out if the heads on your runner have ever been done under recall by Toyota.
What worked for me is I called Toyota's toll free customer service line, gave them the story, they asked for the VIN, looked it up on the data base.
It was called the V06 campaign, they told me what dealership had done the work, what year, and the mileage when it was done.
I really think most all of these motors have been done by now but it couldn't hurt to ask right?

My recalled and repaired head gasket blew again
I just bought a 1994 for a really great deal $ because there is an issue with the head gasket. When I went to go pick up the vehicle, I brought 20 gallons of water, thinking that the 30 mile drive would have me topping up the radiator, or getting it towed home. Lucky me, I was able to drive it 30 miles on the interstate without it overheating at all. Temperature remained normal.
I heard about the recall on the motor, and called Toyota, gave them the VIN, and they told me the work had been done in 1998 when the truck had 50K miles. They also told me it was a "one time only" per vehicle recall.
As I have read in some previous posts in this thread, that perhaps no milling of the head was done, and this engine is prone to needing head gasket work... I thought those problems were in my rear view mirror when I got rid of my old straight 6 4L Jaguar. Crud.
Last thought. During my intensive search for the recall info, I found a previous owner of my SAME VIN complain that head gasket blew again within 4 years of it being replaced under recall.

1992 head gasket leak i think???
Hey there i have a 92 toyota 4runner with a possible head gasket issue just looking for some additional advise, today when trying start it it would not crank (almost like it was sized) for the first 2 trie, and then it sputtered up without even cranking. it started blowing out some pretty white smoke that defiantly did have a sweet smell to it. it was idealing pretty rough and a had a bit of a shake to it. but once i started driving it ran fine. until i noticed the engine temp was dangereously high, i pulled it over to let it cool down. tried turning on the cabin heater to help it cool down but for some reason it was not putting out any heat.
Reasons why i think it is a head gasket:
-Sweet smelling white exhaust
-over heating
-very low coolant levels (little leaking near front left of engine well)
Reasons why i think it may be something else...
-no milky oil
-no heat moving in from engine to cabin
-previous power steering pump sounding whine instantly went away
-coolant reservoir very low and can not see any bubbling or coolant for that matter at top of rad when running
any ideas guys?? please help!! if it is the head gasket im going to call toyota tommorow and see if it is part of that recall you guys were talking about. i realize how old this fourm is but its worth a shot?

Yes, it's almost certainly a bad head gasket, but no, the dealer probably isn't going to do anything about it. The special service campaign is over.
